The first game is fucking awful, the retards who wanted a sequel got one, and it plays much the same.

Mirror's Edge and Assassin's Creed are on opposite sides of the video game spectrum, where one side is about simple quality gameplay with no fluff, and the other side is about game quantity and open worlds and stuff like that.

The sequel forced it towards the middle, where fans of the old game didn't like all the stuff that was added/changed, and fans of the other side still don't care.

It's not Mirror's Edge. Mirror's Edge was a collection of tightly created single levels that are fun to do time trials in, flawed by the inclusion of fights that are not fun when guns are in play, and pointless when they aren't. Instead of giving us pure time trial goodness like that dlc for the original, Catalyst fell for the open world meme making most of the game running around to get where you're going and not as well laid out time trials due to them having to work in an open world. While they took out guns, they left in the regular combat making it pointless instead of pointless and not fun.

>EA botches a followup game in a franchise

Who the hell was surprised by this. The only surprise related to Mirror's Edge is that EA was involved in the first one and it was a unique new experience that hadn't been EA'd to fuckery.

As soon as they announced a sequel, we all knew what'd happen. Anyone who didn't see this coming isn't just blind, they have a total inability to perceive the world around them with any sensory apparatus.

>I'm simply surprised that EA even considered making a sequel of a game that didn't perform to their draconian expectations.

I think they realised that they had an unusual hit on their hands; it wasn't a massively popular game that made billions, but it was unique, they wouldn't be competing against anyone else really and it was fairly well received, which is unusual for EA really, so they gave it a shot.

Also I'm willing to bet that one of the higher ups with a little bit more sense than the others has been badgering them for ages to put some trust into the idea of building up some new IPs instead of churning out normal shit, but then they threw all their EA-ness on it and so ME2 and Fuse both are shit and they'll use this to justify future decisions.

It's really bizarre in a way. EA keeps fucking up their own shit, literally the entire world knows it, sees what they're doing, and constantly talks about it, and yet they never learn. They'll fuck over the team that worked on ME2 because the game wasn't a massive success, and they won't try it again, and they'll blame absolutely everyone else for it rather than admit that their own management decisions are demonstrably damaging the brands they're trying to promote.

Jesus you fucking faggots, nobody in this thread even played the sequel.

It's literally Mirrors Edge plus. Everything is the same. Hell, it is even better in terms of traversing mechanics, you get new moves and gadgets to play with. The first one was pretty shit already, but the second one at least tries to improve it a bit.

>Main missions occur in tightly designed spaces, rarely in the open world.
>The upgrade system is pointless more than anything, most stuff on it is unlocked when you start the game, you can only unlock extra stuff (you still have the "roll", but if you unlock it you don't lose speed)
>open world is also kinda pointless, but you can luckily fast travel around pretty soon... some people might enjoy the time trials and collecting shit, I didn't
>combat is now more or less built in the free running (insta kills if you connect it from a wall jump, run, etc.), sometimes it is not and then it is shit, though you don't really fight much
>story is pretty minimal and can be skipped with holding a button, it is shit though
>shit like the red path showing you where to go can be turned off, thankfully
>game is longer than original (which was like 3 hours, now the game is about 7 main missions only) and again, has actually better missions and level design most of the times

What really bothers me though:
>fucking bloom and visuals, I have no idea where to go sometimes and the glass makes me fee like a bird sometimes as it is completely see through and I think I can jump through it
>actual combat does happen sometime and while it's not QTE or something and actually has light/heavy punch and evade, it's annoying and breaks the flow
>AI is incredibly stupid and can't even follow you on a small ledge

Speaking as someone who actually played and completed the game, it's good.

Unlike anything out there when it comes to it's gameplay. It's like first person games can only either be shooty bang bangs or walking simulators nowadays. This game is good and something different despite the shitty story.

One of the few games to give me a small sense of vertigo with it's sense of height.
>>
>enter thread
>it's a shitflinging war between people who hate Mirror's Edge 1 and feel the need to express it and ME:C shills defending a 4/10 game
>yeah no thanks op see you around
>>
Since nobody on /v/ has actually played the game and can't seem to stop talking about games they haven't played..

I bought it and these are my unbiased, objective thoughts.

PROS :
Runs buttery smooth even on Hyper (Ultra) on a GTX 760. Pretty well optimized.

Open world is really cool, it gives the game a sense of a world you explore instead of jumping from mission to mission.

Whole game is just straight up eye porn, to say it's jaw-droppingly beautiful is to be a massive understatement.

CONS :
Story is a bit short and not too interesting, like after 5-6 hours I'm 50% done. Seems so incredibly generic and follows every single trope to ever exist.

Not sure how deeply Anita's involvement was in the story but the female characters are simply atrociously ass and terribly written. It's very evident the writers were amateurs or tumblr tier feminists and attempted to create strong, independent female types but instead just make them incredibly hostile, antagonistic, argumentative, and stubborn. Basically any time a woman in the game opens her mouth you know she's just going to bitch, insult, or argue. The writers' idea of strong females are girls who attack everyone and everything and try to one-up everyone.

More in next post
>>
Never make a sequel to a game that has a small vocal fan base. I can't believe they thought this was a good idea.
>>
>>340654953
Some more thoughts -

Forced combat sections are fucking garbage. Those far range dudes that zap you and take 30 hits to die are utter bullshit and frustrating to fight.

Upgrade system was literally useless and had no point in being in the game. It does not hinder you in the slightest since you get upgrades so fast anyway.

Somehow in a prequel there's Metal Gear Solid levels of biometric registration to prevent Faith from using guns she finds...but in the sequel, years later, she can use guns she finds?

Exploration is amazing, most of the time spent is just wandering looking at all the awesome visuals.

Movement is much more fluid than in the original.

Not sure why you get a hookshot in this but not the chronological sequel..

Soundtrack is GOAT tier.

All in all it's a solid game I'm enjoying outside of the shitty females and forced combat.

Verdict - 8/10

It's a 7/10 game. Highly flawed, but with some rare moments of brilliance. The story is absolute trash, but it was in the first game too. All the characters are either completely unlikeable or just boring. Plastic is the only one with a modicum of personality, but she's just the stereotypical awkward hacker.

The open world is unnecessary and ill conceived. There's not much to do in the open world except time trials and the like, which are meh. The game shines the most during story missions, which are tightly designed, and feel about as good as the original. There's also some nice puzzle rooms, but there's only like 4-5.

The controls and free running is not at all casualized. Yes you have to unlock a couple of the abilities from the original, namely landing roll, leg tuck, and worst of all quick turn, but you can get them all within the first hour of the game.

The combat's not great, but maybe a little better than the original. The shield you get from having good flow and running around is a nice addition though.

Just pirate it and try the game if you're on the fence, it's really not the shitfest people seem to think it is. It's about as good as the original.
>>
>>340658428

>>340653565
Well, I don't know about DICE's record but EA, the great devourer, will force developers to implement stupid changes, then blame the developers when the game bombs.
>>
>>340658996
I think the reflections and gloss destroys what made the original so beautiful.
The original was more based in the preset with it's architecture, looking like it was inspired by Hiroshima. It based it's style on the exaggerated color bleeding which gave it a beautiful look.
Catalyst has color bleeding in real time, something the original did not have due to technological limitations, but it's not exaggerated and gets overshadowed by the gloss and reflections because Catalyst's style is based on the 'city of glass'.
Also the entire universe seem more like something from an Orwell novel than a dystopic present world.
>>
>>340649957
Well I preordered it and the answers to your question came to me in my first minutes of gameplay.
The game was stripped of everything that made the first one so great.
Absolutely everything you could think of has been casualized.
>little to no need of momentum for anything
>some fights are forced
>the free running is neither fun or challenging
>the paths between two residential blocks are very limited, making some runs not fun
>the runner vision is so casualized even in classic mode, but turning it off is not fun either
disappointed will finish it tho

Surprise surprise. Most of the 'fans' of ME never actually sunk hundreds of hours into it throughout the years playing/speedrunning it.

For literally everyone that did (including not only myself but people like Phillotrax and ovendonkey), the game is excellent. And instead of defending the game on an image board, we're busy playing it.

Ironically ME got shit on when it was first released, and it was the speedrunning community that got a lot of people interested. Same deal here. After we get some good speedrunning content floating around the community in the next couple of months, people are gonna claim they loved Catalyst from the beginning.

This is literally what people wanted though. It's just the Over-saturation of open world made people sick of it and the long time in between games made them forget that they asked for this. Also I'm glad guns are gone.
>>
>>340669473
There are self-contained runs in the open world map that are essentially level like.

So not only do you have levels, but you also have an open map that you're free do run any way you wish.

You also obviously don't know who the runner is. He's a pretty big deal.
>>
>>340669713
Not him but it doesn't, at all, people watch streams for the streamers more than the games being streamed
>>

What is there to do while free roaming? (Legit question, I haven't played the game.)

The number, variety and quality of activities and "things happening" while free roaming are the difference between a good and a bad open world design.
>>
>>340672747
Mirror's Edge is a time attack game, he's saying you can use all of the map on point to point time attacks with no restrictions.

>>340673398
So nothing that couldn't be done with big, regular levels, then?

I know what you're thinking, "but if the levels are big then it's open world", or something to that effect. And you're wrong. Open world means that you can roam freely in between missions. And in good open world design, things are happening in the world around you, with or without you being involved, in a way that makes the world feel alive (i.e. GTA series, STALKER series, Far Cry series). In bad open world design, the world feels dead, artificial (i.e. Burnout Paradise, Crackdown).

Does Mirror's Edge Catalyst's world feel alive, or dead and artificial?

Answering that question with also tell you whether the open world aspect of the game is superfluous and detrimental.
>>
leftists put their "creative changes" in it

>>340675462
>So nothing that couldn't be done with big, regular levels, then?
Not really. Think about it. Big, regular levels would need a start and end point. A large playground however requires no such thing. You can't freeroam in large linear levels.

One of my favorite things to do right now is go from one end of the map to the other as quickly as possible. That's the biggest reason why I think this open map works.

>Does Mirror's Edge Catalyst's world feel alive, or dead and artificial?
It feels the same as Mirror's Edge.
>>
>>340654665

>open world is also kinda pointless, but you can luckily fast travel around pretty soon... some people might enjoy the time trials and collecting shit, I didn't

Nope, the open world is rear to traverse and run thru.

Only time I use fast travel is when I want to retry a time trial.
Aside from that I run like a runner is suppose to do

I only played through Mario 64 twice and consider myself a fan of it and like it. I don't have to be as into it as the guy in this video to be a fan of the game. It's called not being autistic.

I know it will sound like science fiction to you and retards like you, but people like me who have played and thought about thousands of different games from many different genres over multiple decades can actually have an expert opinion on games they haven't even played.

There are these things in the universe called "patterns", which living creatures use in their brain to form "thoughts" and "theories". People who have good enough genetics, and therefore a good enough brain (i.e. me) can actually form pretty advanced theories about the world around them, and use them to form accurate predictions.

The moment they viewed it as a product. Mirror's Edge was a sleeper hit and EA finally decided to capitalize on it. Of course, since EA is a big corporation that only cares about the money the sequel had to be watered down and have as many popular gameplay elements slapped into it. Instead of giving the player all their abilities at the start they had to lock it off in an rpg progression. Instead of having tight level design with constantly changing themes, they made it open world and while there are a few pretty spots most of it is too similar. Instead of unique encounters with enemies to test the player, they had to dumb the combat down because the prospect of random battles anywhere could easily put a player in a disadvantage and/or make some moves useless.

At least they got Solar Fields to do the music again, and that shit's fantastic

It's mostly working out for them, though. They try to distill every IP they have into simple formulaic shit that they can churn out in a steady rhythm and make a constant stream of money with very little risk. The only thing they sometimes fail at is acquisitions, mostly because the IPs they get their hands on turn out to not be as easy to distill. But even then, from their perspective it's probably just a numbers game. They can afford all the fuck ups, because when they get it right, they'll have a new money printer on their hands.

I really don't know what to think about this game
I want to love it but it fights me
I got it on PS4 and
>the texture pop in is literally unbearable, you can be looking at something for upwards of 10-20 seconds and it'll still be loading
>the tolerances on how close you need to be to a wall to wallrun is ten different kinds of fucked up
>the story is absolute trash, but I did like the ending where basically nothing changed except Faith's sister became the head of krugersec, it felt like what would actually happen
>the missions are really good looking and are generally enjoyable, but they lack freedom in some areas
>the enemy design is absolutely lovely, I can't say enough about how good the stun troopers look
>the fact that things like fucking rolling or turning 180 quickly are locked behind a skill tree is fucking awful
>the fact that more than half of the skills are unlocked to begin with makes it seem like a shoehorned thing
>the music is great but it has a tendency to just up and turn off or start playing the wrong dynamic parts, like starting the more intense fighting music when you're just sitting around
>I worry about speedrunning since I didn't see a dedicated speedrun mode and the game doesn't let you just up and skip the tutorial like the first ME
>combat feels nice and generally works, the dash move likes to focus on enemies which while letting you sidestep easier can make it hard to run away
the level design feels kind of unintuitive, but I'm a retard and it might grow on me with time
>the setpieces look amazing, and the last couple of areas, the purple and pink ones, look absolutely gorgeous and make me want to live there
>they added a time trial nodding to ovendonkey which is lovely
>they even thank the speedrunning community in the credits
somebody please validate or shit on my opinions
oh, and whatever this technique is that makes flat textures look textured isn't used at all in the PS4 version
