Because there is literally no other game like it apart from other Bethesda games. There is no game with the absolute insane amount of mods and people backing it than skyrim, just look at the nexus, there is over 42,000 mods for it while every other game only has at most maybe 15,000. It's the amount of freedom and the potential to role play and do kinda whatever you want. Plus people are suckers for fantasy type settings so that adds a lot to it I'm sure. I'm in no one defending any of the shit decisions Bethesda made for the game but they made it just about right to were anyone can play and enjoy it and then the mods add so much more. There is literally a mod for anything you could ever want to do with the game; naked Loli mods, archery overhauls, dungeon and landscape changes, guns. Modding isn't limited to graphics. I was talking about gameplay mods that fix the combat add more spells which are actually fun, not just stronger versions of each other. A better perk system, so that perks aren't just do more damage/spell cost less magicka.
First of all you must install SKSE (skyrim script extender) otherwise a lot of your mods won't work. Then get SKYUI for the same reason (and to fix the horrible consolebabby UI) I would get the unofficial patches for the base game and whichever DLCs you have. Also get guard dialogue overhaul so guards won't repeat the same 5 lives over and over again. Get crash fixes and the double cursor fix for more bugfixes.
Then I would install some basic gameplay mods which I can't do without. Get one of the perk overhauld (SPERG, skyrim redone, perkus maximus, ordinator, i would personally recommend ordinator but have a look yourself) Download spell mods (Apocalypse spell package is highly recommended) Then if want to make combat more interesting at least get cobat evolved so the AI won't be so dumb but if you are looking for something that's actually challenging get deady combat too. These are what I can think of right now but there are shittons more that make the game worth playing.
Also read a guide on modding before you fuck everything up.

Skyrim is comfy fun for me and Solstheim is legit GOOD. It's just a pleasant time waster game that doesn't challenge you too much and it's fun to break it apart with alchemy, crafting and enchanting. As someone with about 1.3k hours in the damn game, it boils down to being very easily amused.
Sometimes you just don't mind the repetition of content and just feel like doing the old experience grinding and skill progression by going into that cave near Whiterun that has a single troll and fighting it for hours on end. Or because you want to test spell mods. Or because you want to try mod dungeons. Or because you want to tryroleplaying with the customizable journal mod they have.
Keyword mods, of course. Back in Oblivion I would often start an entire new playthrough just because I had a single new mod installed. I can't possibly imagine what people that have been playing VANILLA Skyrim for over a thousand hours are doing with it.

I've not only read every book in these games, I've also read the wiki. The "lore" in ES is garbage. As sand-boxy as the games themselves. Theres just too much shit going on, that is way too powerful and illogical to actually make a game based around it. Especially not a sandbox game.
For example... asassinating an emperor would be impossible and could just be prevented by guards having live detection rings. Spells can literally do anything. And so can deadra. Magic itself is way too powerful for everything not being destroyed constantly, or people running and jumping around like crazy. The fact that anyone can lead a normal live is beyond believe. Every single quest raises billions of questions, because of the sheer amount of potions/magic items and spells that can exist.

This pretty much. I just run around my heavily modded world doing whatever I feel like and raping anything in my path and it's a blast. I can go on week long Skyrim binges every few months and enjoy the hell out of it.
Real talk though; Skyrim honestly isn't a terrible game. Despite its laundry list of flaws it's still possible to get immersed in the game world and enjoy yourself even without mods. The problem comes when you've played the game to hell and back like I'm sure everyone here has and the flaws start to make themselves more and more apparent.
Yes, the magic system is awful and the melee combat isn't much better, the dungeons all look the same for the most part and the grand majority of quests involve "go to this cave and kill some Draugr", and the guilds are crappy, and on and on (seriously, I could list what's wrong with Skyrim all day)...
... But what other game lets you turn into a fucking werewolf at will and eat people's hearts, or suck people's souls out while reanimating their bodies to use against their friends, or shout dragons out of the sky with your manly voice while you hack them to death with an axe? What games let you do all of that shit at the same time, and even more with mods? Hell, you can mod Skyrim into a completely different game if you wanted to. It's the ultimate sandbox game.

It's not terrible, it's just presented terribly. The entire opening sequence to the game is how literally not to make an opening for a game and leaves a bad taste in your mouth for the rest of it. The whole civil war while the Thalmor plot from the background idea is actually pretty good but it's hampered by Ulfric being a fucking retard and the entire thing ultimately being pointless. The actual cities you fight for being a loose collection of huts with a castle in the back doesn't help either.

I was a console pleb when Skyrim came out and must have put a couple hundred hours into it before I finally got my PC and played it there. The difference is literally night and day with how enjoyable the game is.
I honestly don't know how I did it before. I don't think I could go back to Skyrim without mods. I didn't even mod the game that much - just a few things like texture and lighting updates, SkyUI, the mandatory bugfixes and some new weapons and armor - and it's so much better with just those. It's so much better to not be afraid of the game crashing whenever you open a door like it used to on the console.
