For a newcomer to the series, which one is better to start off with?
Apparently no one recommends Persona 1 or 2 for whatever reason.
Persona 3 FES for the love of jesus do not play Persona 4 first, you'll just get annoyed by the gameplay of 3. (plus persona 3 is referenced in 4)

Persona 4 = 1960s Batman
The reason no one recommends 1 or 2 is that the encounter rate is insanely high in those games. They got remade on the PSP but not all were localized. Persona 2 also has two games, the PSP remake of Persona 2's other half was never translated.
If you wanna check out Persona 1 or 2, you'll wanna play the PSP versions. Persona 1 doesn't have a lot of story to tell and it's your traditional late 90s PS1 JRPG. Persona 2 is the more interesting of the older games but is archaic and may not be to your liking.
Persona 3 is closest to the overall "feel" of the Persona 1 and 2 games than Persona 4's deliberate happy-go-lucky campy aesthetics. You should also never ever play Persona 3 Portable first, always Persona 3 FES.

It is incredibly edgy and cheesy though. The story takes a backseat to the gameplay. P4 feels like the story is the main part and it does just fine. Persona isn't a very good dungeon crawler.

It has no in-game or animated cut scenes (it's basically a visual novel with 3D sections for the dungeon)which leads to quite the butchered experience, good for replays though.
Also it removes multiple weapons for MC and fusion spells have been reduced to a one use item.

P3P is fine.
It was my entrance to the series and I put over 100 hours into that beauty of a game.
Main differences are:
-in P3P, you control a cursor around the map instead of actually walking around. This is fine and actually pretty convenient.
-in P3P you can control all of your characters unlike P3 or P3FES where you have to fucking pray to God Mitsuru doesn't use Marin Karin on fucking bosses of all things.
-in P3P you'll miss out on the anime cutscenes but that's fine. The game does a good job of keeping the vibes real and the hype real
