Hey /v/ what is the general concensus of genji? I'm looking to pick him up. What are his strengths and weaknesses and who does he beat 1v1?

Best counter to shit like Bastion and McRee, so if you're salty about those, make sure to pick him.
He's great at getting behind enemy lines with his mobilityshit and harassing Snipers and Supporters, too.

Granted I only use him occasionally because we're getting gangbanged by turrets/bastions and nobody else on my team will even consider switching nevermind to something useful 90% of the time.

Remember that your dash actually deals damage and resets cooldowns on ANY elminations, use that to your advantage.
Your ult's hitboxes are extremely huge so you can double jump and aim downwards and still hit people, it's easy to hit airborne targets like Pharah and all that.
Genji isn't very good against anything that can keep him still, a trap from Junkrat(kinda hard to see sometimes when you're jumping and running all over the place) or a Flashbang from McDonalds will be your end.
Deflect is very useful just don't go full retarded with it, your back is still exposed during it and don't put yourself at risk for a chance at reflecting an ult or something.
Always run when your HP gets low if the situation allows, you can grab health packs and be back in the fight in literally no time.
Try to aim for headshots, specially when you see still targets(mostly widows not realizing you're around them and focused on aiming)
Be the counter to Bastion and Snipers for your team, make sure to prioritize Mercy if she's in the game though.

what you described is not situational but its also done best by another characters such as Tracer, Reaper and even Winston.
your puny shurikens are laughable and no decent player would shoot you when deflecting.
So whatever way you are using Genji, there are more efficient heros to fill that role, even Bastion killing.

He is great.
The first thing to do is to buy the "Mada mada" voice clip, so you can taunt the foes you have bested.
Also, remember that your deflection ability can deflect nearly anything, par energy projectiles (like that of Winston and that Russian whore). You can kill tons of people with a well timed deflection. It is best used close up.
You can also deflect ultimates, basically any of them that are projectiles.

Reaper is shit tier in comparison to Genji.
His mobility is worse, as is his range. His teleportation is telegraphed, and his phasing is fucking pathetic.
Any decent Genji player can shut down a reaper with ease. Just throw your shurikens at him (they do loads of damage if you know how to aim), and if he tries to close in with his stupid shotguns, go in yourself, deflect those shots at his ass, throw a bunch of shurikens at him, quickstrike trough him, and stab him in the ass for good measure.

A skilled Genji is a nightmare to fight against, but you can't just be a hero and rush into 3 enemies and pop your ult for guaranteed PotG, you'll get killed before you can eliminate a single target. You actually need to think with Genji.

Not him but the only character I think can better counter a Reaper than Genji is Widow/Hanzo, and Widow/Hanzo aren't good for playing the objective, only getting kills. Why not be a counter against Reaper AND be able to cap the point or move the payload?

Pharah, McCree, Junkrat, Bastion and even roadhog's hook besides the two you mentioned are better at dealing with a reaper than genji

I admit, I'm only level 20, and I haven't played around with most heroes, so I don't know much about Pharah and Junkrats match-ups.
McCree, Bastion and Roadhog are good picks against half of the roster, so it's not exactly a counter, just a good pick. Then again Widow and Hanzo are kind of in the same boat so I can't really point any fingers here can I?

Pharah is a straight up counter to Reaper, because her ability to fly allows her to basically avoid all damage Reaper could hope to do, and also track that spooky asshole's movements with ease.
However, in regards to Genji, Pharah can't do the job Genji is for, which is getting behind the enemy lines, and fucking shit up.
Pharah is far more of a straight out offense hero.

Even if that Lshift had charges, it doesn't change the fact that as a Support, that character would literally lose access to an ability unless they were shooting, and since it's a tracking gun, it'd be close range, and if it was midrange and it's a self heal, it would be too hard to balance properly.
Kinda like that Q, though.

I would prefer it if the L Shift was actually passive, and any shot you hit with the primary gun actually redestributes the health between the whole team.
Obviously it would take a while to actually bring the team to full health, but I think we need a support that is actually encouraged to go to the front lines and get as much damage in as possible. Plus, having a healer that doesn't have to focus on certain players would mix things up a bit and encourage someone to play healer that otherwise wouldn't.
Genji is literally invincible.

They usually have a mine planted next to it and you can't deflect an explosion. They'll either bait your deflect on the first hit or you'll try to hold out and die on that first hit not being deflected.
