A lot of people(mostly trolls) will talk about how people can't really tell the difference between 1080p and 4K except in specific circumstances. This is actually somewhat true for video captured with a camera, but absolutely untrue for computer graphics.
The real world essentially has "unlimited resolution." There are so many rays/photons emitted from a given object that literally millions of them --samples -- hit a given pixel in the sensor array. In contrast, computer graphics sample each pixel in an image only once. Techniques like downsampling and AA are an attempt to provide the "extra" resolution that's present by default in the real world by sampling the same pixel multiple times. So even a low-resolution video taken with a real camera is like a game running with the most cutting-edge downsampling and AA enabled.

I really do wonder what made them think this was a positive move at all, considering the landslide they are already winning with, and 4k's lack of standardization in common households. This does nothing but piss off those who already have one, while appealing to a demographic that doesn't really exist yet. Console trends dictate that we have another 4 years or so until the next gen should hit, and this move to make .5 versions of consoles is worrying.
This is another DLC situation, if it does well expect Console developers to try and standardize this into a trend that holds until consoles are finished. Least exclusives are dying so this console bullshit will die out eventually.
