Hey /v/, I just bought this on sale today. I've never played either of the first two Diablo games. Let alone any game like this.
Any tips going in? How fucked am I?

It's fun, but there's a lot of meta shit you'll need to learn.
One tip I will give you, find the "elective mode" in the options and enable it. That way you can mix and match all your abilities.

Just enjoy it, mate. D3 has more than a dozen difficulty settings to fit your mood.
I really fucking enjoyed RoS, the Crusader is a fun class, but maybe that's because I loved the shit out of the paladin in D2.
The game is simple. Kill monsters. Get loot. Get better loot to kill bigger monsters. But the mayhem is oh so fun.
enjoy waiting for a year of seasons to go by so you can have more stash space.

You won't get the Diablo Feel from the 3rd game, that's only present in the first two. But hell, this one is just super fun to play. Just try every skill and skill rune you unlock, you'll figure it out quickly how to optimise your character.

The thing about PoE .. it's a good effort, but it's rather slow and doesn't really convey the carnage as well as D3. If you enjoyed D1 the best out of all Diablo games, then I can see though why PoE is appealing.

OR you could build to have 1 really strong ability. That's what I think makes it a LOT better than D3. The skills aren't hand-holdey. It's not 'pick one medicore skill of 3 medicore" it's FUCK THIS SHIT 20000 rounds per minute of flaming poison dart monkeys... if you want it to be.

I'm just saying POE gets a LOT faster than D3 can ever HOPE to be... and it can be slower...
it's just a better more flexible game. The skill build is a lot more free than Blizzard's skill system which is essentially the call of duty:

It's a bit shit comapred to something like POE. Pick one of 50 skills... that are all altetered in a major way by X of 20 major game changing skills... and effect other skills via support skills that have crazy effects.
I mean in POE i made an 'AOE TANK' that could only tank GREATER than a certain number of mobs.. any less and the lfiesteal.
Back in the old days I had characters that were SPEC'D to be magic find. I would have that skill that gives you 200% magic find or something... when you were less than 30% health.... Then i would put auras to reserve my mana below 30%... Then use that talent that makes your spells cost life instead of mana so it kept me at permanantly below 30% life.
Meanwhile D3: "Oh your fireball now.. leaves.. a dot on them.. yeah ... enjoy your customisation!"

3 is more arcadey and gets boring after a week or two because of how easy it is to finish your build.
I like Grim Dawn. It has a great atmosphere, nice design and a lot of fun too. Mixing classes is super fun and you can make a lot of different builds. Most complains are there isn't enough active skills and there's too much damage and resistance types. I can agree on the first one but I don't mind the second one. Definitely a super time waster. I got 430 hours on it and I'm still aging it. Devs are great and push on update every two weeks with sometimes new content. There is also mod support now.

It's a decent Gauntlet game, but not much of a successor to the Diablo line.

No need for tips. Diablo in general has always been fairly mindless and easy, and D3 just casualized it even more. Literally all you have to do until end game is click your mouse and find items that increase 1 stat (your main stat) while mostly ignoring the rest.

well I am an imageboard poster, so no friends, the rest of your points are enjoyable sure, but the actual combat, which 99% of ARPGs revolve around isnt all that entertaining in any of them. in titan quest the most fun build in my opinion was also really passive, reflecting dmg dream+defense
its just a playstyle no other game besides grim dawn seems to offer
