Why no new games based off Lovecraft's mythos?

lovecraft is old and busted

too many people trying to imitate it without fully understanding what made lovecraft so great.

It's a game I desperately want to beat, but I'm certain I will FULLY lose every level 6 I send to the Darkest. My heart cant take it.
>>
>>340583790
I don't know if you're serious, but what made Lovecraft so great was the fear brought about by a sudden jarring of how the main character interpreted the world. All of his best stories included some discovery that radically changed what it meant to be human or even just exist in general. Copycats fail when all they try to do is replicate the fear rather than the philosophy.
>>
>>340582969
A real Lovecraft game would always end with the player character dead, dying, insane, or turned into something inhuman. No modern studio has the guts to sentence a player's avatar to bad ends as the only destination.

To be fair, most Lovecraft stories do end with the main character dying, realizing they're about to die,or going mad. In Mountains of Madness, while the main character didn't go mad his partner did upon viewing Yog-Sothoth while they flew away.

which almost all "lovecraftian" video games miss. they don't understand any of the reason behind why he wrote about this stuff while holding the beliefs that he did or the direction he was going with it. They just do oh shit i'm going insane by looking at stuff (which is fun for settings anyways but still).

When it comes to recent Lovecrafitan efforts, I recomend The Last Door parts 1 and 2.
If you can get past it looking a tad bit too pixalated for its own good, it's one of the most atmospheric horror adventure games out there.

As for future games, Frogwares seems to be finally delivering on what they hinted to be capable of trough such efforts as Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened.

You don't see Shub-Niggurath

Cthulhu has a good OL thing going for her though.

Only if you buy into his interpretations of the mythos without actually reading Lovecraft, or bastardize your understanding of his work further by going by such inanities as the Simon Necronomicon or the role playing game.

Darkest dungeon

>all the shit is there from the start
>think its just some spooky monsters like skeletons and meat men
>slowly find out that everything including yourself and your men are all eldrich creatures
>all made by the heart of the world
>the heart of darkness
>kill it, it goes back to sleep, you become the new ancestor after decades of knowing of this
>"Ruin has come to our family"
>>
>>340597378
another subtle thing

>last area is open at the start
>try to attempt it
>everyone goes instantly insane
>>
>>340590948
that's the thing, what you said isn't true. most of his stories don't end in the main characters death, though he is surrounded by it.

that being said, now that i think if it many of his most famous stories do result in the main character going bonkers or dead, such as:

shadow out of time
the other gods
he
the dunwich horror
the rats in the walls
>>
>>340598527
I'd argue that a few of his others went this way as well: Dagon had the narrator hunted by the Deep Ones, Shadow over Innsmouth had the narrator become one, Celephais ended with their body dying but their mind being trapped in a dreamworld, Call of Cthulhu left him traumatized and paranoid about his future.
>>
The Consuming Shadow is sort of one.
Fight off the horrors of a god invading our world, with limited time, resources and sanity, trust me, next to health, this is the first thing that goes.
>>
>>340599080
dagon leaves things ambiguous enough to question if the narrator has just lost his mind though didn't it?
>>
>>340597065
I don't know why anyone would sexualize Cthulu but it makes my dick happy
>>
>>340597312

Lovecrafts idea of his own horrors were blatantly built upon their incomprehensibility and the sheer horror of mankinds mental limitations.

Derleth couldn't handle the idea because he was a super christfag and spoiled it with dualism concepts.
>>
>>340599705
Which would fit it into the "___ goes mad" part of the three endings in Lovecraft: ___ goes mad, ___dies\is about too, ___is left otherwise broken. Very few of the stories end with the protagonist making it out fine.
>>
>>340597508
Was this a recent thing? Haven't played in ages, but unless it was super hidden I haven't found this.
>>
>>340600032
I didn't follow the reply chain all the way up. I just saw the poster talking about not everyone dying. but yeah insanity is pretty common in them.
>>
>>340599993
I know. Derleth went as far in missing the point as to develop a cosmic "system" where every Old One was put in a role within the cosmos, "correct" or blatantly edit out things he disagreed with in Lovecraft's prose, and write posthumous "collaborations" with "Lovecraft" or even pose some of his stuff as that of Lovecraft's.

An argument has been made that despite his faults, Derleth saved Lovecraft's work from obscurity with Arkham House, but given Lovecraft's wide net of friends and correspondence, some who later voiced their displeasure on how Derleth jewed the publishing rights from the hands of Lovecraft's relatives and closer friends, it can also be debated that he did his legacy more harm than good.
>>
>>340600998

He's literally "that friend"

>Hey anon you're writing a fantasy novel
>Well I think it would be really great if you added this generic satanic overpowered dark lord into your story!
>>
>>340601264
More like an acquaintance of his actual friends that happened to be at the right place at the right time and learn of Lovecraft's death quicker than those who would have handled his legacy with more grace, getting the rights to his works for a song while the corpse was still warm.
>>
>>340589275

Yes. It's its own thing, as is Fallen London, the browser game it span out from. But overall the world building is dedicatedly Lovecraftian, albeit with a bit "zanier" touch to it at times.
