Chief Kief was fantastic as Big Boss and David Hayer's Snake voice had began it's long descent to horse shit by the time MGS3 rolled around. He was at his absolute best in 1, started to decline in 2 but was stillsolid, began to really show a decline in quality in 3 (he had some gold moments but a lot of poor ones, and that's me saying that with it being my all time favorite game), was really bad in 4, but at LEAST it could be explained with "he's old and shitty now", but when it came back in Peace Walker he was done for me. PW's voice "acting" was abysmal. Hayter had forgotten how to do Snake properly.
I actually have a theory. It's fact that during MGS1 Hayter had a cold and it attributed to how his voice sounded. Now, my theory is that he tried - and failed due to being healthy - to replicate that voice and failed almost every time, steadily declining until he was full blown terrible. He could never properly replicate the voice he got while having a cold.
tl:dr
Hayter was dynamite in 1 and 2, mediocre in 3 and dogshit in 4 and PW

Hayter can still do the same voice he did for MGS1. I do it all the time at cons. The problem is the fact that the Kris Zimmerman asked him to alter it for MGS3 to soud different from Solid, and asked him to sound old and sick in MGS4. She then asked me to do the same for MGS5 Peace Walker.

I thought he was at his best in 4. It's really the only time the gruff voice sounded appropriate. He's an old man close to death. Big Boss is an entirely different character, so it makes sense for them to have different VA's. I just wish he wasn't so quiet and boring in PP. He's like an anti character in that game.
