Browse the unit site:
https://units.arma3.com/# and get some unit after your taste. If you like milsim with pseudo military lingo and realistic gamestyle you will find a lot of groups. Realsim is still tactical but without the roleplaying or milsim element.
Look for a unit that plays with ACE3, TFAR and probably a content mod so the game becomes a little bit more complex. Avoid cancerous communities like Wasteland, Zombiemods, Life and KOTH.
Start learning scripting and building in the editor. It's easy af and fun as hell. Every community will lick your ass if you are a decent mission builder.

yes if you really want to be a prick you can even argue that the entire game is a roleplaying game where you roleplay as armed combatants but really honestly altis life is for really, really deep end nerds that want to roleplay in a mil sim game instead of anything that would suite them better.
actually their mere existence really shows what untapped potential there is for a second life game that has the kind of free roam and driving that arma games have.
just play it. join a clan if you want to stand around while some kid gives orders. people will flood in and say 'WELL WE PLAY COORDINATED NOT AUTISTIC' and then later they say they have a monthly meeting where people give out medals or something retarded.
i just play the domination mode and its fun. avoid the 7th cav server if you can because those people are fucking retarded.

Liberation is the best CTI gamemode I've seen. It's purely coop but at least resource collection is a thing.
Find a good group to play with. Arma 3 is not particularly good game from a mechanical standpoint. Its strong point is the sandbox that creates experiences with friends and other people.
For finding a group:
If they have ranks like private and sergeant, avoid them.
If they have a tacticool name like the 571th special operation hunter killer stalker unit, avoid them.
Don't be afraid to pop into a group and play a few sessions with them. If the group isn't to your liking just leave.
Play Epoch. It's the only good game mode besides toying around in the editor.

Yeah there a few different variations for A3 kicking around.
beCTI is the most vanilla one: Build base, take town, earn dosh
Zerty, Proman and crCTI are the same but with variations
All those have a slight PVP focus because there's two factions with independents defending the towns
Liberation just removes the second team altogether and makes it entirely about taking the island from it's defenders. It's the most fun if you have a group of friends to play with.

Yeah the CTI I know of is 2 player teams with enemies already in the bases to clear.
I tried playing the CTI mode that is built into the game and besides all of the servers being in a different language everything just seemed empty.
I usually domination so I put most of my time into PvE, I am definitely going to try out that mode when I get back to my place next week.
