I mean, if you just use a long sword you can r1 through the game np, magic seems irrelevant
Magic is shit, as it deserves to be.
There's not really any reason to ever use magic since you can use a straight sword without having to give up precious estus.

I wouldn't really bother, maybe use some fire against the enemies that are vulnerable to it but there's no point beyond that.
At least for your first playthrough. NG+ and subsequent playthroughs do whatever you want.

when i first got the game a few weeks ago some high level magic user invaded me and couldn't hit me
i couldn't kill him because he had like 40 vigor or some whit and he'd just use an estus but one of the first knight you meet before the second bonfire killed me for him

Buff spells are still as great as ever.
Utility spells are situational and range from extremely useful to pointless. Some are pointless in PvP but make PvE a breeze, whereas some are only moderately useful in PvE but great in PvP.
Damage spells are pretty god awful right now. They reduced the damage scaling on them significantly, but also raised the cast time for your first spell in a combo to unusable levels. Making them terrible for primary damage and impossible to use for quick pokes as secondary damage.
If they reduced the cast time on your initial spell, or made weapon combos that allowed you quicker cast times in between attacks, magic would be fixed.

it takes a lot of practice, particularly because the vertical axis is so fiddly and theres no reticle or even persistent visual cue. once you get the hang of it its rewarding though

Most Magic is just different tiers of the same spell and only a few of those spells are worth using. The most of worthwhile utility spells have item/ring counterparts that give the same effect. Unless you are min/maxing a certain build buff magic isn't worth the investment.
If you are using a weapon that requires some kind of int/fth investment (morne's hammer) then its fine to use whatever spells you meet the requirements with, but magic just isn't with investing in outside of dedicated builds.

Do you have 10 vigor or some shit? Not to mention the fact that you shouldn't be getting hit by spells in the first place, literally just roll or even run to the side. Every caster I've faced I have beaten.

You can oneshot someone with almost any weapon and hornet's ring. Less overall investment, no FP managment, no sacrificing your estus and you don't use up all your ring slots. Compared to regular weapons magic is garbage.

Great Chaos Fire Orb is probably the best allround offensive spell in the game. Decent casting time, easy to control manually, AoE damage, lava dmg for s short time after attack, good damage and decent FP cost.
