because for non-clipping legs, it would require difficult simulations on nonflat surface, also animation of walking backwards or sideways of same speed like forwards looks wierd - people really dont walk back/sideways as fast as forward. Rotating around would be slow either. Also people have momentum, you can't just start moving immidiatelly at full speed, it woudln't look normal, and with implementing such thing - remember pre-patch movement in witcher 3, it's not good for gaming.

making a good animations for jumping on uneven terrain and crouching would be also pretty difficult in order to look good.

So why the fuck spend so much time, effort, and computation time for feature, which most of players wont see.

all of these are just poor excuses.

Automatic foot IK has been a thing since fucking N64 times, and can be applied to ANY model. The full-body awareness is at its simplest form just a 3rd person character, without the head being rendered on the main camera, with camera placed roughly where the face should be.

Also, it's a video game. People have watched game characters do all sorts of impossible and awkward movements since dawn of time; it really would not take anything out from the experience, nor would it take any extra time, as the same animations can be re-used on NPCs and the player. Not to mention thanks to advances in automated IK mechanics, you can literally auto-generate passable bipedal animations, without spending a single minute in 3D editor.

look at assassins creed, they have top tier automatic foot/leg IK, and look how much clipping and errors it still has. Take any game with legs and pres W quickly few times while looking at your "solved since N64" leg movement.

People in real life just don't move like characters in FPS games. With 'classic' FPS movement you will never have realistically looking animations.

Another thing is why should dev bother with it, when no one cares. It adds literally nothing to gameplay, you dont see it 99.9% time ad no one, literally no one except few haters on /v/ cares.

You seem to be stuck in a nasty loop of "That's not how things are in real life!", when same could be said of just about every single thing in games in general. People would be fine with minor clipping for sure, and nobody complains about the weird two-part movements in Counter-Strike and such. and replicating reality with as close to 1:1 accuracy as possible is necessary only in simulators.

All in all, it all boils down again to devs being lazy, and/or trying to conserve those super limited spec resources on consoles. There's really no reason to not have a basic full body awareness this day and age, especially if you spend ages making fancy first-person cinematics, that show the required assets anyway.

A related issue is the matter that the FP-game characters still operate and move like literal blocks. Fucking System Shock had a simulated body for the MC, with all the actions reflecting on the character's pose and situation. You could climb up on top of obstacles, your melee swings could get hit to environmental obstacles if you stood too close to them, leaning was limited by them as well, and so on.

Model/skin/anim aside when talking strictly mechanics it can be done in minutes. The problem lies in the fact that this is a console game with a low fov, therefore there is no reason to setup a fba because the camera won't capture it in an immersive fashion. It can be done and it has been done in a handful of titles but without proper fov it looks completely unrealistic.
