The game and characters aren't bad. I found myself loving a lot of them, Hell I hated mao, but almaz and the princess were my favorite, and still are among my favorites to this day. But by comparison, it is definitely not the best story, probably the worst.
That being said, it's not a bad game, just not the one disgaea game I'm going to recommend if I'm ever asked.

You can play almost every single game. If your PC can play the PC version of D1, you can play D2 on emulator. D3, D4, and DD2 (which is shit, btw) are all available on PS3. D5 is the only game you won't be able to play, as it's on PS4 only right now.
If you want the best experience of D3 and D4, you'd have to play the Vita releases, though. But the games themselves are fine on PS3.

I think a bit shorter than Disgaea 1's. There's significantly more content in the game overall though, and the mechanics are much more user friendly. The jump from D1 to D2 was pretty huge.
