At the end of 3rd year, you need a certain percentage of points to be considered successful so that you don't get game over.
Getting married (10 hearts wife and child) is about 20% of your grade, and you need 70% completion of farm animals, recipe, tools, friends, shipping, etc, to pass year 3.
It's possible to get through year 3 without marrying anyone, but you need to work your ass off, upgrade buildings, etc. Just like on a farm.

The last good Harvest Moon was DS, the best is FoMT. Story of Seasons is full of flaws and annoying design choices and doesn't feel half as good as FoMT or Rune Factory. I can't see the new Story of Seasons being any better. I wish RF5 would be announced, farming, craftin and interacting with townspeople was so much more fun in RF4 than SoS. Also whats up with the lack of voice acting in SoS?

So as someone who stopped playing at Tale of Two Towns, would you recommend I get into SoS? If so, which games?
My main problem with the HM games by that point was that they started to become so generic and lacking in interesting features. I much preferred the Rune Factory games, and not because of the RPG gameplay. I felt like RF handled the farming gameplay much better. It was faster to farm and had easier, quick controls; villagers were more interesting with different dialogue almost every day and all sorts of cutscenes and events you could do with them. It felt like those developers were improving things while the mainline HM series was stagnating. Has anything changed? Has there been a bigger step up in this regard?

Rune Factory is the superior series, but I enjoyed SoS all the same.

HM3D and SoS practically regressed in that regard, the villagers are about the same as always but they added some shit, I guess you could say they added grinding mechanics, like you need 10 magical rocks to build a machine but the magical rocks only spawn in one area and they have a 5% chance of spawning every day so you have to go check the area every day
You also need to stockpile literally everything you find from the beginning of the game, because iirc small rocks can only be found by picking them up off the ground and you need like 200 for some buildings and shit like that, and it's a special kind of hell not having enough
They do give you more customization which is kinda cool, you have a lot more control over the layout of your farm and even town, but the weird grinding element could easily put you off from the games, they're pretty different from the older titlesTry Stardew Valley if you haven't already, it actually strikes a really nice balance between classic HM gameplay and newer features
