Clear a single player campaign or two first before starting multi to unlock a few characters.
You'll also get a slightly better hang of how the game flows in general as you're introduced to the various maps and field events.
Jumping straight into multi right now may be harsh considering the amount of Breakers being played due to their release.

This is pretty solid advice, most lobbies (especially /v/ ones) run at speed 4 which means it's going to be incredibly confusing and overwhelming if you just waltz in unprepared. Doing a few campaign missions will clue you into what's actually happening. That said if the campaign's horseshit is too much to bear then don't force yourself.

Somewhere between 1-2 hours.
Fernet makes a lot of the levels easy, usually beating them on the first try. Just aim on getting stars. The AI is dumb and will usually just waste its stars on cards and kill itself to the boss. You can abuse it with a deck like the top one here, as the AI will use cards at almost complete random, wasting stars casting your hyper, healing you with dinner and you can usually get a much better hyper (Like Mariepoppo's). Lonely Chariot can also work well in place of gift exchange if there's no offensive AI characters.
On either Kai's first map, or the map with Sora and 2 Mariepopo's, it's actually pretty hard to win with Fernet. You can play Starbreaker if you have her and do nothing but hug the inner ring of the map, fighting everyone whenever you get the chance. The bottom deck here is the one I used, although you can try Lonely Chariot in place of Dash. Store manager can work as well. Yuki and Tomomo might be ok but not nearly as good.
In the Extra map with 2 Poppos and Kais, you can play Mixed Poppo and pretty much win without trying, or just pick Poppo, using the Fernet deck, and using your hyper whenever you pick it up. You can replace the gift exchange with Lonely Chariot if you want to hold on to your hyper as well, which might work better, but keep in mind the AI is running gift exchange as well.

Oh, actually I made some mistakes in my post.
First off, Kai's first map is not actually that hard to beat with Fernet, but Starbreaker is easier.
Secondly, on the Sora + 2 Poppo map, don't expect to have stars ever if you're hugging the center ring, always go wins.

If you haven't played Fernet, basically just never fight, (Except things like -1 evasion characters with 1 health or bosses with 1 health). Focus on getting your norma first if you have enough stars, then focus on landing on star panels over anything else. Card panels otherwise. Take battle over drop panels unless if you have 6x your norma stars than you need for your norma. Hold onto pudding and dinner and use them if you hit 3 HP if there's +2 attack characters or you risk landing on a boss. Hold onto your hyper but don't use it so it can be gift exchanged. Healing cards take priority though.

To any beginner here:
So in this game you have to complete goals by either collecting enough stars or enough "wins".
You complete a goal by landing on either your or someone else's goalpost. You get the option to stop if you pass your own goalpost.
When you complete a goal you level up, and then you get to pick your next goal. Either more stars or more "wins".
first to level 6 wins the game.
You can get stars from star panels and a few in the beginning of each turn. You can also get half of an opponents stars by beating them in a battle.
You also get 2 "wins" when you beat an opponent in battle. You get only one win for defeating the monsters found on a battle panel (the red ones).
In battle, you can choose to either defend or evade an attack. Defending will reduce the damage you take, but no matter how well you roll, you will always take at least 1 damage. Evade however can avoid taking any damage if you manage to roll higher than your opponent. if you don't then you take damage equal to the enemy's roll.
Just remember that each individual character has different stats that can boost their dice rolls.
And then there's cards. They do different things. some costs stars to use, some require that you're a certain lvl.
The cards will explain what they do.
