Haven't been playing any lately, but my backlog's full of em

Lost Odyssey, Xenogears, P4G, and the Moe Chron post game are the main ones.

Also considering restarting from scratch in Growlanser 4

I'm playing Growlanser 2, actually I think I'm almost finished it. It's a short game but I'm going to replay it afterwards to see the other routes.

I'm enjoying this game quite a lot but if you're looking to start this series I recommend playing Growlanser IV on the PSP first (with a patch for the voices).
>>

Playing some good ol' FFX.

Why?

Have been rotating between Radiant Historia, Xenoblade Chronicles, Tales of Vesperia, and (replaying) FFVII. But I put a halt to all those temporarily because Fire Emblem Fates came out so I've been playing through that.

Playing and enjoying Dragon Quest VIII, I'm about 40 hours in.

What should my next JRPG priority be? I've got Xenoblade Chronicles, Final Fantasy XII, and Bravely Default on my backlog.
>>
>>340494806
If you want an offline MMO, play Xenoblade.

If you want an offline MMO with a mess of development troubles play FFXII.

If you want a game that would have been good if not for shit tons of rehashing, play Bravely Default.

My fault mainly, got burned out between all the furloughs and grinding to make Crev OP.

Also, it's been a while since I last played it, but the game is too open-ended for me to recap through youtube.

Still love it though, the freedom of choice it gives you is rivaled only by Alpha Protocol out of all the games I've played.

>>
>>340493616
This very game actually, level 34 and just got to rocket town. Can't wait to get Cid I think you get him in this town if I remember correctly.
>>
>>340494919
I have never even touched an MMO so I have no idea how they play.
>>
>>340494539

Yeah, but the combat is something else. Took me around 3 hours to understand it, and another 3 to understand how to abuse tri-attacks to get the best out of each person.

It's really fun though, give it a try.
>>
>>340494539
You'll either love it or hate it. It's battle system can get a little overwhelming at first and you will probably get your shit kicked in for a bit. However, if you can power through it, you'll find that there's no better feeling than pulling off some excellent trigonometry to kick some ass. Downside is once you get that good, most enemies stop being a challenge and battles can get pretty repetitive (though boss battles are still great). Story is a bit of a mess but the world and characters are both interesting and funny.
>>
I'm actually about to play FF again. I'm stuck between VIII or X/X-2, which should I go for?
>>
>>340493616
Who else /chocoboracing/ here?
>>
>>340495085
idk about FFXII but the only MMO part of the gameplay in Xenoblade Chronicles is you have abilities with a cooldown
>>
>>340494975
>grinding
Don't grind, that ruins the fun. I recommend trying to avoid random fights - you can run away by moving the MC to the edge of the screen. I really wish the game was more challenging, the battle system is really great but you never really have to master it since the game is easy.

Growlanser IV isn't really all that open-ended, but I agree that playing it > watching it because the gameplay is good.

Also, as mentioned before, there's an "undub" patch available.
>>
>>340493616
Fuck yeah. These threads are becoming more prominent. Can't wait till after E3 when all them other 2016 jRPGs will come out.

Just finished DQ 3. Fucking loved it. New to the DQ series. Already played I and II before it since DQ bros told me to if I wanted to indulge myself. Gonna play Breath of Fire III PSP next and then first Suikoden.
>>
>>340495512

>>
>>340495085
the combat is not turn based. you can walk around enemies, your character automatically does a basic attack, and you can chose from a list of special attacks or moves. xenoblade chronicles has a great combat system though, i dunno if he meant the offline mmo description as a criticism, but it shouldn't be one
>>
>>340495769
It's more than just the combat. It's the world exploration, the way quests work, everything.
>>
I bought Chrono Trigger DS.

Is it a remake or a port with cutscenes? Also there were no animated cutscenes at all and then I got to Robo and BAM it came outta fuckin nowhere
>>
>>340495916
It's just another port, with a new shitty dungeon or something and a new translation.

The cutscenes are from the PS1 version.
>>
>>340493616
im playing Yakuza 5 if that counts
>>
Is the Star Ocean series worth checking out?
>>
>>340495858
but that stuff doesn't feel specific to mmo's, it just feels like typical open world game behaviour. the combat system is the only thing that feels 100% inspired from mmo's

I'm looking to play a turn based JRPG with an excellent battle system (with plenty of tactical depth, requiring different approaches for different fights), challenging but well balanced boss battles for someone who doesn't fight avoidable/random battles, preferably no random battles, and a story that doesn't completely suck.

Some of the games I'm considering are:
- Arc Rise Fantasia
- Grandia II
- Mana Khemia

Please advise me on which to play, or recommend something else.

>>340496493
Most of those are just character-specific endings based on you're waifu or whatever. There's three major routes in the game. There are lots of optional events as part of various characters' quests but it's not really anything unprecedented.
>>
>>340496947
So long as you can leave out the random battle hate, just about any Megami Tensei game.
>>
Does Recettear count as a JRPG?
>>
>>340496947
You might like Legend of Legaia if you can tolerate the random battles.
>>
>>340495769
So how does the combat system work when you get good? Do you dodge all enemy attacks and slowly wear them down? Do you combo them to death? Or what?

Just finished 7th Dragon III VFD
It was some real fun shit, it's been a longwhile since I got that feeling of just wanting to keep on going in a JRPG, most of the game feels too easy but then there are points where it starts ramming you in the ass hard, and the Secret Dungeon is some real bullshit, it makes me want to play 7th Dragon and 7th Dragon 2020

FFVI romhack that uncensors the game but keeps the Woolseyisms
Chrono Trigger romhack that patches the game's most egregious bugs

Odin Sphere's battle system is a little repetitive, but I never had to grind personally. The story in my opinion was pretty great and felt like I was watching a stage play in vidya form.

DQ 8 is also great as well. The story is simple, but each mini arc is always interesting or heart-warming. Inever felt the need to grind, but some may say otherwise.

SaGa Frontier

As fun as it is, it's also incoherent as fuck, and it has a serious problem with not being able to tell where the fuck anything is on its maps because it has really shitty and hideous prerendered backgrounds that are poorly mapped at the best of times, not to mention not having a flee option when the game often locks you in tight quarters with fast enemies.

Still going through Rouge Galaxy, just found out I missed some random item for the Revelation flow, and thus half of the movesets I could've used for Jaster have been locked out for 8 chapters. Went back and got it, but honestly, it wasn't worth it. I just spam Desert Wind and it kills everything in 1-2 hits. I've also been going through the first Suikoden as well.

Skies if a great game man, my favourite game of all time and I always give a shout out to anyone playing it. I'm thinking of replaying it on Dolphin and attempting to play it in 3D if it'll let me, should be a mad experience.

Playing Trails in the Sky SC, currently at Chapter 3.

Honestly, the game is kinda boring so far. It has better pacing than the first one and it seems like is going somewhere, but it takes too long and a lot of the dialog is very redundant.

I finished the first one and this one is no doubt better, but I just don't see the hype or the "amazing writing" fans of the series told others this series had.

it's a dungeon crawling RPG and your actions spend AP but the gimmick is that:
1. Your AP is shared among your entire party
2. AP does to reset to 100 after every fight (but winning in 1 turn gives you 25 AP)

No random encounters but if you leave the dungeon everything revives.

No EXP system, you power up by upgrading skill trees by using item drops.

Here is footage of the tutorial dungeon:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vleNPu6Evu0

but the rythmn stuff is at the very end. Timestamp is around 35:30

You have to learn how to juke the enemies. The more you play the better you will get at it. Though I agree with it being hard to know where you can go or sometimes interact with on the maps but part of the fun of SaGa is the discovery.
