Sly series is still one of my favorite platformers. 1 was very linear, but still very fun and a great beginning for the series. 2 expanded a ton on 1, with a deeper emphasis on story along with more open world elements with the hubs, along with upgrade systems and allowing you to play as Bentley and Murray. 3 stagnated a bit, it was very similar to 2 but also in an attempt to be different had a shit ton of minigames, not bad but it's probably the weakest of the trilogy. Then 4 came and sort of split the community. It's generally acknowledged that 2 is the best and 1 is second, but many people argue whether 4 is better than 3. 4 had time constraints which caused things like released minigames and a QTE final boss, the overall story is better than 3 but many of the individual villains are weak, the ancestors are far better than the new crew in 3, the load times are horrendous, the game is one of the best looking except for some of the character designs, it's highly debates.
Personally, 2>1>>4>3, but none are bad games. If you ever want to try them, play in release order. If you don't like 2, I wouldn't bother win the rest.
