The Profaned Flame is the Darksign Sun.
The Pilgrim Butterflies, attacking you in the Dragonslayer Armor fight and overall flying around, are what happen when the Londor pilgrims don't die as ordained. The rocks/shells they wear either prevent 'spreading darkness' from entering them or keep it from escaping them. Presumably their humanity going out of control, combined with Bed of Chaos shit turning them into crazy tree-like crap.
The Profaned Coal is said to contain the Abyss in it, so the Profaned Flame is a humanity-targeting flame that combines fire with the abyss.
Basically, Sully decided that all that shit above sounded p. good, so he sorcery'd his ass to pope status while taming the Profaned Flame for himself, which is why his phase 2 gives him those funky branch wings.
