When will the VR bubble burst?

>motion control fad
Died off after 2 years, except for an EXTREMELY late attempt by MS to capitalize

>(current decade's) 3D fad
Practically dead outside of theater

>(current decade's) VR fad
???

Anyone with common sense knows this is bullshit. We will try it for 10 minutes, say "oh neat" and go back to what feels comfortable. I.e. what we can spend hours doing on a Saturday.
>>
for me it's too fucking expensive
even if it weren't, i'm really not going to care much about it until they make .hack// levels of vr a reality
>>
I'll only use it for the porn simply because I can only stomach that shit in short bursts.
>>
People who try it say it's really cool. Doubt it's a fad like motion controls and 3D, just a niche.
>>

>>340482630
>>
>>340482379
They have that now, the VR we have at the moment is what most players in the .hackverse used. That one kid in the show experienced it like it was real because of plot device. What you want is Shadowrun level VR, and for that we need something akin to this: http://shadowrun.wikia.com/wiki/ASIST
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CJBXRNVDE4
>>
I didn't even realise they were making motion controls for it untill it was close to releasing.

Who the fuck wants that? I just thought itd be neat to play horror games and fps games in 1st person. Which you can do now but its not worth the price for me. Motion controls are and most likely always will be a gimick. Maybe in a couple hundred years we can hook up our brains to a computer and have actual vr
>>
>>340482753

Yeah it'll be a niche thing until we have Matrix/Holodeck-level realism.
>>
>>340483417
What the fuck?
>>
VR is already dead
>>
I'd literally only use it for porn.
>>
>>340483417
what.
>>
>>340482235
Depends on whether or not game developers actually make use of the tech. FPS's and sims like Ace Combat and Gran Turismo are going to be the genres that make the most use of it. Basically we need software devs to take a leap of faith to make this work.
>>
>>340482235
The Sony VR gimmick needs to come out first before the bubble will burst. I'd say another year before people have abandoned their devices because there are no proper games, just gimmicks.

Also expect plenty of shitposting and false flagging direct from and to Sony when it releases.
>>
>it's a "it's new technology so it has to fail" thread

HEY GUYS, WHEN IS THIS "HD" FAD FINALLY GONNA GO AWAY
>>
Nintendo is going to do what they did with 3D. Headset free VR.

How? Specially made lasers that are neither blue nor red shoot in the eye and fill it with graphics.

Trust me, I'm from the future.
>>
>>340482235
VR has too many non-entertainment applications, it isn't going to die. And with these other applications, devs will always have the tools available to make video games with it now, while it may take time to grow it isn't going anywhere.

With that said though, have you tried it? It's a great way to experience a lot of games. I've had a DK2 for couple years now, gotten hundreds of hours of use out of it. Now my Vive gets here on Friday. Are you even a gamer anon? What happened to your sense of wonder about new games / ways to play them?
>>
>>340482235

I think the bubble already burst. It's going nowhere because it doesn't accommodate people who wear glasses very well and it is also really expensive.

Not to mention you basically have to have a dedicated room for it.

This generation is not good at innovation so they're rehashing ideas from a couple decades ago without solving any of the real problems that arose>>340482379
>>
>>340482235
>When will the VR bubble burst?
It is quite honestly already collapsing. It's dying because Facebook has decided all the different devices are like consoles and so they should be trying to buy off exclusives and competing instead of proving the viability of the idea. And VR is so fucking uselessly niche that it's effectively suicide.
>>
>>340484448
? I wear glasses just fine with my Vive, have you tried a consumer model?
>>
>>340484424
I love how this is the go to response for anything remotely VR.

>Have you tried it??

Funny, I've never seen someone have post purchase rationalization before even getting their product.
>>
>>340482235
it already burst
it was always something that only enthusiasts will use, but marketers tried (successfully) to hype up your average joes into thinking itll be the next huge thing comparable to going from standard detail to HD

now that theyre actually out and extremely expensive, people realize that they arent the next big thing
>>
VR will only be used for porn, and arcades.
Arcades will see combinations of VR gear that people can't afford, joined together in cabinets for the "full immersion" experience, eg Vive/Occulus + Omni Virtuix + Control VR all at the same time.

The arcades will have to buy the shoes and harnesses in bulk, just like when you borrow the shitty rental gear at skating rings.

The porn things will be for people that already spend money on porn, and also in porn shops where they'll have replacement fittings that you pay for on each usage.

I think my prediction is the most accurate of where the big amounts of money will be made.

Oh also, community colleges will spend money on the VR painting in 3D stuff with Vive, as a fad, so they can claim they teach making art for VR. People will be dumb enough to spend money on this.
>>
>>340484679
>Cherry picking

I get that you have no way to refute my argument so why even post?
>>
>>340483417
that's hilarious
>>
>>340484424
>It's a great way to experience a lot of games

considering most games do not have vr compatibility, statistically its a great way to experience a select few (mostly shitty shovelware) games
>>
>>340484424
>VR has too many non-entertainment applications, it isn't going to die

You do realise the technology hasn't improved since the '90s? The only real change is that screens are being cheaply mass produced now due to smartphones and tablets.

>Are you even a gamer anon?
If by gamer, you mean consumerist sheep which throws money at everything companies push out because it's new, then no.
>>
I think AR will be the next big thing once they get it portable and stylish. Not for gaming but for lifestyle wear.

VR? Toys.
>>
>>340484152

Apparently some people are so susceptible, they actually lose balance. Happens in non-Russia places too.

>try VR at convention
>10 minutes later

>15 minutes later

I'll buy it when they can tap into my mind and create a dreamlike state where I don't have section off a part of my living room for VR.

Most games can be played with your Oculus or Vive.

Research this shit before shit posting. Anything with a first person view can be played quite well in VR, top down also is quite ideal.
>>
>>340485029
How exactly have HD VR screens with head tracking existed since the 90s

>>tap into my mind and create a dreamlike state
im really curious how this would be pulled off if someone managed to make it work.

i mean if they intercept the vision, audio and nerve impulses/signals, will it stop those parts of the body from working during the immersion, or will your body still use energy trying to communicate between that and the brain?

if you use it for a long period of time, are your eyes gonna feel really strained because they were stuck open IRL, but you weren't blinking or actually receiving any vision from them?

what if they realize long periods of usage from it literally fucks your eyes over and can't be reversed. how the heck do you even stop that unless you force the users eyelids closed.
>>
>>340484951
Nah man, there's third party shit that'll work with a lot of games supposedly. My contact worker has a DK2 and he's said he played through New Vegas using it.

Smells like a bunch of jelly poorfags up in here. Step aside plebs, the future is here and getting delivered to my door in a couple of days.

>You can play almost every game you own on your PC with VR, primarily things with a first person view, anything open world, RTS, this is not counting games actually designed for VR.

>If you're not a poorfag and own a decent film drone and camera, you can also create full 360* VR experiences. (This is what I look forward to most.)

>Many design tools have VR support, working in a VR work space is quickly becoming a more productive method.

>Limitless desktop real estate with one display

The people not hyped for VR are all console tier kids who don't understand the applications of it, or people who simply can't afford. It is -not- a consumer product at this point in time. This is still for devs and enthusiasts though I can certainly understand gamers wanting to get in on it, it is a great way to play a LOT of your old games and new ones.

Should you go out and buy a VR setup? If you try it at a demo and are amazed by it like you're a kid at disneyland? Yes. If you put it on and feel meh about it, probably not.
>>
You can always tell the people who haven't tried VR. "When will this meme end?!"

VR is amazing and isn't anything like 3D. It's not a gimmick, it might end up being a niche until it's cheaper. I'm sorry you're too poor to have a setup yet. Faggots.
>>
So what happened to all those kickstarter backers?
>>
>>340486087
>>VR is amazing and isn't anything like 3D
Technically it is still just 3D, but with different methods of input.
>>
Any """"""""VR"""""""" that isn't about plugging your brain into a computer is a gimmicky fad. You'll always have the limitation of the room you are in, you'll always have the limitation of feeling a god damn screen being slapped on your face and weight you down. You'll always have the limitation of having to hold on to a bunch of motion control things.

Fuck all that, I'll be playing regular video games until they come up with actual VR in 50 years.
>>
>>340484524
>only faceboobook does VR

>>
>>340486279
3D is a part of it but not the whole attraction. Motion controls are a part of it too but not the whole part. Actually if it wasn't for all these fads (motion controls, 3D)... VR wouldn't be as advanced as it is. I'm actually thankful for that shit in a way.
>>
>>340482235
VR and AR is actually pretty useful in other fields aside of gaming.

Motion controls worked well for a few games, but most were crap.

I tried to get into 3D, some 3ds games were alright but most not. Even bought a PS3 3D display, kind of neat but fucking hardly any games supported it. Really pissed me off.

VR just does not interest me.

Those are all failed competition of other much better things. You're being too short sighted.

VR, 3d and motion controls don't have competition

Oh really? But betamax was superior to VHS, zip drives were superior to burnable CDs, laserdisc was far superior to VHS, neo-geo AES was far superior to SNES and Genesis.

VR's actual competition is with standard monitors.

>a decent film drone and camera
confirmed for knowing nothing about how VR works. To get a "full 360* VR experience" you need multiple cameras working in tandem, a bare minimum of 4 but more likely with 8+
>>
>>340488883
you could tell the drone to just turn along with your head
>>
>>340483549
Fps won't work unless it's like hover Junkers. Most of you guys will get too sick to play. room scale and cockpit games are where it'll shine. Devs haven't had enough time to work on anything yet, e3 will have a slew of decent games.
>>
>>340489190
Again, you have no clue what you are talking about. Read up on it.
>>
>>340486930
Computers are modular tools that are capable of a shitload of things. You can make an expensive powerhouse computer or get a cheap utilitarian computer to do exactly what you need. You can mix and match parts and incrementally upgrade over time.

Phones are a necessity. Whether they're "smartphones", feature phones or just a landline. The number of features a smartphone has makes them worth it for those who use them. Many smartphones are quite cheap now, just ignore that overpriced Apple shit.

HD has been a slow and gradual improvement over the course of decades. HD didn't "catch on" despite being too expensive, higher definition pictures become the standard because it becomes affordable.

The former three all "caught on" because they became cheaper.

This current line of VR devices are fixed, expensive pieces hardware that rely on you having other hardware ("expensive powerhouse" computers) and their applications are highly specialized. Their market is still new, they are still expensive and still unproven. There is no killer app that sells them; in the entertainment market, they are seen as novelties, the kind of thing each person will use for two minutes to get a laugh out of that roller coaster and move on. It will remain a toy for enthusiasts for years to come.

This is always cute. But he is correct, you can get full 360 film with a single drone you fucknut, there are drones designed specifically for it.
