Use a strength build. Get Focus and Fog Breath on your character.

Planning on starting this game up in the next week or so. Here's a bump for you.
What's the best way to go about playing this shit?

>PS2
>PSN
>emulated

I have all three available. I wish I could play this shit on my vita though :(
>>
Full luck gotta get dem items and crits
>>
>>340483123
Last I checked there was an issue where you couldn't solve some ladder puzzle on emulator without fiddling with some settings.

That might have been fixed by now though.
>>
SMT Nocturne is one of the few SMT games where it's extremely recommended to go straight up STR. Strength and raw physical attack are godly, and Demifiend is going to be your main damage dealer while the rest of your demons will be support, magic, and buff/debuff. You don't encounter a ton of Physical resist/null/reflect demons until 2/3 through the game.

That being said, your magic stat governs your magic defense as well so do not totally neglect it.

Use a guide to figure out which Magatama have which skills, and plan out your Demifiend. I know a lot of people frown on guides, but you have to level grind to unlock Magatama skills, and if you accidentally learn the wrong skills or pass certain level threshholds you can make it so much harder, or even impossible, to get the skills you want.

I usually have these skills on Demifiend:
Focus [THIS IS A MUST, NEVER DELETE IT], it buffs the next physical attack by 2.5x
Fog Breath
War Cry
Magma Axis (late game skill, it's technically a fire spell but it scales off of physical attack)
Single- Hit physical attack
Multi-hit physical attack
And then filler. I think a buff or something.

Also, last but not least, money is really fucking hard to come by and even late game demons don't drop money for shit. Don't be afraid to sell excess items, don't bother hoarding too much.
>>
>>340481686
>STR>AGI>VIT

Strength will make you jacked as shit, Demi-fiend should be the hardest hitter in the party.

Agi will make sure you don't miss - this is essential in this game because missing makes you lose a turn.

Vit will let you not die, which is important.

Magic is for fucking faggots, don't bother with it. Make a cute demon waifu to handle spellcasting for you. Luck is pretty bad, level it after you are done with your important stats.

Also, make sure you learn the "Focus" ability. its VERY important.
>>
>>340483051
>lying this hard
The best attack in the game is literally a physical skill that hits anything with full damage.
>>
>>340483220
Completed true demon ending on emulator and had no issues it might have been fixed
>>
>>340483220
Don't know anything about a ladder puzzle
Only pcsx2 problem is that an invisible maze becomes visible iirc
>>
>>340481686
There are no builds in SMT. Like most JRPGs, stats are assigned on level up.
>>
>>340483667
No it's like Torment and many other wrpgs where you get a stat on level up.

Don't feel embarrassed about talking out your ass tho!
>>
>>340481686

>STR all the way
>Get Focus ASAP for Demi-Fiend; it makes your next physical attack deal 2.5x more damage for 5 MP
>Fog Breath is amazing. It drastically reduces the enemy's evasion and accuracy
>War Cry is good; it severely lowers an enemy's physical attack and magic attack
>Buffs and debuffs are crucial
>Balance out your demons' weaknesses and strengths; e.g. if you have a demon that's weak to Ice, have a demon that Null or Repels Ice because the Null/Repel will force the enemy to lose turns.
>Fuse Daisoujou as soon as you can and watch as he never runs out of MP while fully healing the party and removing all ailments and also nulls/repels quite a few attack types

Don't be afraid to use a guide to know what weaknesses to prepare against for boss fights. The game has some pretty rough boss fights.

Fusing.

You can customize and make your demons whatever you want them to be. Learning how to fuse is the most important part of this game.

Also, get buffs.

They're fun painful. Going through the amala ntwork was exciting because you never had any idea how badly you were about to be fucked.

The only unfair one was Beez since you have to have anti-death or something to survive him.

Fuck you buddy, those last couple of puzzles were soul crushing.

>>340484664
The key issue with Matador is his mult-hit attack and Red Capote, which maxes out his accuracy and dodging statistic. Which means every time you miss an attack against him you lose a turn.

Therefore, try to find a way to lower his evasion stat. Fog Breath and Sukunda/Sukukaja will be your friend.
>>
>>340485364
Maybe the gun is set damage then.

Anyway, I've never enjoyed the SMT series for its dungeon crawling; in fact, and I'm aware this is heresy here, I always felt that level and dungeon design were SMT's weakest aspects. I just fucking love the combat so damn much.
>>
>>340484664

I believe if you're level 18, you can get Uzume through Fusion. Media is one of her default spells and she voids Force attacks. She'll be able to fully heal your party and cause Matador to lose turns when he uses Mazanma.

Is normal mode the preffered starting difficulty?
Or does this game die out towards the end if you're not on hard mode, due to how retardedly strong your party gets?
>>
>>340485792
Also, half of Matador's attacks are Force/Wind attacks, so have demons/yourself either being resistant to that or at least not weak to it. Any demon who is weak to force will give Matador an extra turn to attack. I do not believe Matador has any weaknesses though.

Matador is a major casual filter boss so don't be ashamed at sucking.

Normal mode will be fairly balanced for you throughout the game save if you do the True Ending path and grind a lot, though even then you won't likely become too OP without a guide. Hard will break your balls if you're doing NG of it early on, but becomes far easier overtime once you got a decent party lined up.

I'm fugging serious, mate.

My 2DS got smashed, so when I got another one, it technically was a different machine. So I had to go look for the support website, drop them an email, get that phone call, give them my ID, they give you a confirmation number, they fucking ask you what digital titles you used to have to prove you are you, and THEN you can connect your 3DS to your old ID. AND you'll probably have to download the game again too (which makes no fucking sense to me).

But hey, they have Zelda music when you're waiting on the phone. :^)

>Top-tier skills of all elements
Wait, what? I just booted my Nocturne save before the last boss and she has none of that.
Only Mazyodine, Megidolaon, Mediarahan, Samrecarm and Endure. Of those, the only one that is really cool is Endure, so my Titania was pretty much better in every way except for the stats (which don't really seem to make that big of a difference) and being 10 or so levels lower. Does she gain more skills if you level her? I am missing something?

>>340493238
Stick with that physical Magatma until it teaches Focus and then it will carry you for the rest of the game.

Uzume is a nice demon to have at that point, make sure you learn all of her skills.
>>
>>340493498
Until? Should I swap mags for bosses after I get it?

What level do I get focus at?
>>
>>340493238
The next two major bosses focus on electricity/physical and physical respectively.
>>
>>340493610
i was under the impression you only get a skill if you have the mag in when you level up

i don't want to miss it or anything
>>
>>340493564
You should be swapping out Magatamas if the one you have equipped won't give you a skill next level
You get Focus from the Kamudo Magatama at level 23
>>
>>340493776
That is correct, but so long as you don't refuse the skill when the time comes or pick it and replace it later you can never miss a skill.
>>
>>340493776
How it works is you need to be a certain level to get a skill from a Magatama, then have it equipped when you level up
You can't straight-up just miss getting a skill, don't worry
>>
>>340493564
You're talking about the Kamudo magatama, right? It teaches Focus after level 23. The way it works is that the magatama teaches skills only after you're at least at a certain level. If you are level 25, equip Kamudo, and gain a level, you can still learn Focus, for an example.

If you look at the Magatama screen, you can see that some of then are shaking, this means that they are close to teaching a skill. I recomend looking up a list of magatamas online so you can plan your skills ahead, though.
>>
Do stats affect how much HP and SP you get when you level up
>>
>>340494721
I believe Vitality determines HP and Magic determines MP. Magic also determines magic defense.

I don't think it has anything to do with stat gain on level up though.
>>
>>340494087
Are there ever Magatamas you don't want to equip until later on in the game? So you don't learn their skills too early?
>>
>>340494812
I don't think magic gives you magic defense in Nocturne
I'm pretty sure that wasn't a thing until DDS
>>
>>340494721
No, but each point of Vit or Mag increases them by a set amount. Notice that if you equip a Magatama with Vit/Mag bonuses your HP and SP will increase as well.

God, I can't wait to get back to SMT. Playing Persona 4 right now. Too bad it, like Persona 3, is pretty boring most of the time with only good moments here and there. I'd have stopped playing already if I didn't buy it. That and the fact that I'm at the very end of September have 5 months left until the Golden ending are the only things keeping me going.

I was watching some videos of SMT III last night, it looks pretty good. One of my more anticipated SMT games, though I'm quite looking forward to Final as well, though I'm not sure why. Maybe it's the soundtrack that has me interested, and the fact that there's an Alliance of Gods in there. Got to be more interesting than high school shenanigans. I managed to find an iso of the special edition with Raidou in it, so that's cool (even though I haven't played any games with Raidou and know nothing about him. I've heard he's useful because of pierce skills).
>>
>>340495229
On DDS I went for a full agility/strength Serph and he was taking almost twice as much damage from magic as Argilla was. I did the same thing in Nocturne and didn't notice Demi-fiend taking any more damage than the other demons, really. If it changes your magic defense, it must be a rather small amount.
>>
>>340495506
Is the Raidou version actually translated?

That's what charm bullets and ice/thunder swords are for though.
Magic is for healing, Hama/Death spells or buffs.
Offensive magic is pointless. The only good one is Divine Punishment, and that's a skill instead of magic.
>>

SMT1 magic seems OP as fuck, does insane damage and causes near constant status effects, STR is fucking useless when I do 3 times as much damage with a MP5 with nerve bullets then having 25 STR and a top tier melee

Too bad it doesn't work in other shops.
>>
>>340497641
Maybe I'm just remembering wrong then and thinking it was the same as SMT II. Because magic in SMT II did almost no damage and was only good for stunlocking, which you could do with guns and swords better anyway.
>STR is fucking useless when I do 3 times as much damage with a MP5 with nerve bullets then having 25 STR and a top tier melee
The good fusion swords trashed the guns by mid-late game in SMT II. Again, it could just be my memory acting up for SMT I.

>>340497812
>I'd bust out my demons and have them zapping the bosses too because why not?
Because they did garbage damage and regular attacks or buffs were just more viable.
That's what I found anyway.
>>

>SMT1 magic seems OP as fuck, does insane damage
what
I will concede that Zio is useful for keeping people shocked, though.

Melee doesn't actually get good until you get a decent sword, After that, you won't even need your guns anymore. My SMT 2 run consisted basically of casting tarukaja and letting Aleph and Hiroko kill every boss in 2 turns with Sword attacks.

>Melee doesn't actually get good until you get a decent sword

Really? I always just used guns in SMT 1 because status effects and they hit groups of enemies. I usually did more damage with my guns anyway. In fact, my strategy for most of the final battles were:

>Have Cu Chulainn
>Use Tarukaja every round
>Have the hero and heroine shoot

>>

Dekunda removes debuffs on your party. Dekaja removes buffs on the enemy party. Some bosses have those skills to fuck up your strategy. Some bosses will cast it almost instantly (like Matador) and some do it very infrequently.

That's almost identical to my SMT II final boss experience, except add Divine Retribution for the first couple of rounds and replace the guns with sword attacks.

Also I was doing so much damage with sword attacks that the game did that werid overflow glitch where it roll all the way back to minimum damage because the values went too fucking high. That shit was really annoying.

The SMT series is on my list, I'd like to start it soon. Anyone here play some in Japanese and English? How are the localizations of these games? I can play in Japanese, it's not too difficult, just requires looking up kanji and words at times, but not like it was a few years ago. Kinda getting burned out of playing RPGs in Japanese though, I've played only a few games in English for the past couple years.

So how are the localizations? If they're shitty, I'll just play in Japanese. Almost tempted to do that anyway since people seem to think certain scenes with Toki will be censored in IV Final. I've seen them and they're tame as hell, so I don't know.

I hear that the best versions of 1 and 2 are the PSX versions, so those I'll be playing in Nihongo.
>>
>>340500393
Lucky bastard. Since you can read moonrunes, you get to play SMT IF...
I think most of the localizations are fine, though.
>>
>>340501453

Why does If get so much hype? I'll play that one eventually, but it's not high on my list. I'm more interested in I-IV Final and Strange Journey at the moment. From what little I know about If, it sort of makes me think of Persona 1, though that may just be because of the high school setting. I really know fuck all about it though except that the female main characters shows up in Persona 1 and 2.
>>
>>340501661
I'm not sure if it gets hype, it's just that its one of the few ones that haven't been translated, so a lot of us want to play it. It was the inspiration for Persona, actually; it had this mechanic called "Guardian", which is a demon that protects the human characters and gives them stats. It also has a more psichological focus (rather than the Law vs Chaos thing of the other games) and is set on the same universe as Persona as well.

Other games that haven't been translated you might wanna check out are Majin Tensei I and II on SNES, they look pretty cool.
>>
>>340502449

If's psychological focus sounds interesting. And I know even less about Majin Tensei, but I was listening to the soundtrack and I can say that it has a great soundtrack at least.
>>
>>340502631
>If's psychological focus sounds interesting
Play Persona 1 if you haven't yet. You're gonna love it, it is a very underrated game. Go for the PSP port, though.

The Majin Tensei games are Strategy RPGs, which is what makes then different from the others.
