Why are desert levels such shit? They're always boring and long, it seems, unless the entire game takes place in a desert-themed setting. Otherwise it seems shoehorned in.

I never did understand why the fuck the sewer linked to a fucking desert in XII. In fact, wasn't the sewer so massive it linked almost all the major regions of the game, from swamp to desert to forest to ice mountain? How the fuck did they build a sewer that massive, and why, when there are literally zero towns above 90% of it's length?
