I was pretty confused by KH2 when it first came out but since then they've been pretty easy to follow. It's not that complicated if you accept that it's about wizards and magic and anything can happen if someone wills it. Some things are intentionally left mysterious but the plot's not that convoluted, especially now that everything's coming together in KH3. I think I get it all so far

Sort of. Instead of using objects as Horcruxes, he's using people and it's not really do dodge death. It's to gain universal knowledge and power. He did body hope once though because he wanted to live long enough to see his plans bear fruit as he was pretty old by the time the main timeline started.

Kingdom Heart's plot is both convoluted (not complex, just convoluted), and bad. So if you try to push through the ambiguous storytelling, you're rewarded with the revelation that it was indeed just fanfic-tier fantasy spew.
