What I think is that Half-Life 3 at this point suffers from Duke Nukem Forever Syndrome. If it's released, I doubt it would meet the amount of hype.
That said, judging from Portal 2, I doubt Valve won't do another forced co-op/multiplayer integration to justify a cash shop in a $50 game.

The recent patches just made the game even more "beginner friendly" just to put it in light terms.
The pub scene is a disaster. and its only going to get worse.
What i hate the most is that valve shamelessly hides features that were free before (Winter map on Winter season) and put a fucking paywall to enable , yet its not even yours to use whenever you like. it expires after the season ends.
