Well, my bud is real big into Halo so I've been playing the Halo games and enjoying myself, I've been entertaining myself with Rare Replay which may not have anything on it that you can't emulate but having them all on one disc is pretty nice.

I dunno, most western games have been boring as shit as of late and follow the same iterative game design for the most part. Ubisoft open world games feel like Ubisoft open world games, with padded boring objectives pointed throughout the map, a tower to climb in order to unlock a section or to see more objectives, the same mission design/structure. AssassinsCreed and Farcry follow most of the same elements, sure the gameplay is different but the core design is the same. Bethesda uses the same engine since Oblivion (or even morrowind, not sure), all of their RPGs feel the same, even the Fallout franchise. Bioware has gone to shit for a while. So on and so forth.
There are some exceptions in the west like CDprojectRED, but even so Witcher's gameplay is just good enough, not really appealing, barely anyone playes witcher becaues of the gameplay, some even play them in spite of it.
Monster Hunter, Nier, Dragon's Dogma, Bloodborne, EDF, EtrianOdyssey, GrandKingdom, etc. don't play like each other at all, and they all have vastly different design philosofies in their structure.
TL;DR. Outside of indies, Japanese games are vastly more varied and fun as of late, compared to western AA and AAA games. That's what you're reading.

Popularity doesn't equal quality, especially indicated by the last 2 generations. The Wii is one of the highest selling platforms of all time, right behind PS2, and DS. Does this mean Wii had good games? Some..but it also had a literally garbage dump of shovelware and shit games.
