What do you guys think of the MSX Metal Gear games?

You beat them, right?
>>
I made it all the way to the metal gear but I didn't have enough C4 to actually kill him and I couldn't go back because the door locks behind you.

I was fucking pissed.
>>
>>340404029

If you kill Jennifer's brother by accident you also get 1 rank lowered and can't carry enough explosives.
>>
I beat 2. Great game.

1 has aged like shit.
>>
>>340404142
Metal Gear 1 definitely has some bullshit. I enjoyed MG2 a lot more, even though in retrospect MGS1 is literally just a soft remake of MG2.
>>
PW and V really fucked with the technology of the timeline.

First one has a lot of great ideas, but is ultimately too obtuse for its own good and a bit of a chore to get trough.
Solid Snake should be required playing for any MGS fan, since it greatly enhances the background behind Metal Gear Solid, and is overall just a great game.

As for the other 2D Metal Gear games, the NES one can be skipped, so can Snake's Revenge (though it's not such a bad game and features a great soundtrack), but you'd be doing yourself a disservice to ignore Ghost Babel the Game Boy, even though it's not canon.
>>
i liked Ghost Babel and Snake's Revenge

MG1 is a pretty clunky and dead simple game. Worth powering through as a history study of stealth games and to see how far back Kojima's trickery goes, but little else.

MG2 is a good experience even today, despite a little too much emphasis on obtuse puzzles.
>>
>>340404930
>>340405125

Snake's Revenge is good, it was made by the Castlevania team.
MG1 on NES is not all that bad, having into consideration the team who worked on it were given only 3 months to do it, and they were tasked to make it different than the MSX version.
>>
The original Metal Gear is literally outdated by Metal Gear 2, which I would argue holds up exceptionally well.

Some of the solutions in the game are bullshit "how would you ever solve it without a walkthrough", but it's still mechanically excellent.
>>
MG1 had alot of bullshit like the game not telling you Schneiders codec number, the 'illusionary' walls, trapdoors and the one door you need to call Jennifer to open.

MG2 is awesome though with the exception of navigating the swamp. I'm convinced if MG2 was released as an indie game today it would be praised highly

Why did Big Boss never mention that the guy in Outer Heaven was a body double?

Why didn't Solid Snake notice that Big Boss suddenly grew a horn and a robot arm when he fought him in Outer Heaven?

Why was the entire story of MGSV dedicated to explaining a "plot hole" from a 30 year old game that has been retconned to hell anyway, when that "plot hole" wasn't there to begin with?
>>
>>340403164
The second one is a really great game. It was nice to see all the elements that were eventually ported to the Solid series. The only thing that I actually disliked was the Hind battle.
>>
>>340403164
MG2 is the best game in the whole series

I hate TPP as much as you do, but it really wasn't made to explain any plot hole, more like it told a new spin-off story that just happened to fit neatly in said pre-existing hole.

And for clarity's sake, we're talking about a plot hole of vagueness, not a plot hole of contradiction. Because those are both very real but different things.
>>
No one told me that you can get combined card keys in MG2

I spent entire game equiping specific level cards, goddamn annoying
>>
1 is pretty shit. Almost impossible without a guide (although that wouldn't be the case if they didn't fuck up and forgot to tell you the number of the guy who actually tells you where to find everything)
2 is one of the best games in the entire series. MGS1 even steals a ton of stuff from it.
>>
>>340409239
>pic

That was one of the worst scenes in the series, holy shit.

>Kaz is torturing Quiet to the brink of death for some reason.
>Venom stands around doing nothing, despite him risking his life to save her just one scene earlier.
>A literal sadist, of all people, is the one to stop it.
>Quiet refuses to just write them a message for some reason.
>Code Talker is there for no reason other than the fact that the plot demands it.
>Quiet conveniently happens to speak one of the most difficult languages in the world because the plot demands it.
>>
>>340403164
MG1 is meh, kinda OK.
MG2:SS is fucking awesome.
>>
I beat the second. The first Metal Gear was boring shit.
>>
Fuck Metal Gear, play some REAL stealth games.
>>
>>340411159
>most difficult languages
No language is any more difficult than any other.
>>
>>340403164
1 is complete dogshit, it's just a Zelda game pretty much.

2 is awesome, it's insane how little the gameplay itself changed between mg2 and mgs1

>>
>>340415732
U1 is only a terrible game for people with ADHD.
>>
What's with all the people in this thread saying you can't beat the first one without a guide. I did that like three years ago with nothing but the manual. Worse, I played the EU version which apparently only contains half the codec dialogue and shoddy translation. The only part I can remember being even remotely stumped on was that little maze with the invisible bombable wall, and I still managed to beat it when I realized they make a different sound when punched.
>>
>>340415732
True. Ultima is truly horrible.

Aged like complete fucking shit, though. I don't care how revolutionary it was at this point.

Enjoy having to grind virtues I guess. Make sure to donate blood and gold non-stop. Also that fucking herbal magic system that's just pretty much just copy protection is shit.

console RPGs, namely the JRPG shit, that was already simple as fuck compared to PC's very D&D-esque games back in late 80s / early 90s.

Fallout 1-2 are CRPGs, 3 and up not.
Witcher 1 is pretty much a CRPG, 2 and 3 not.

This sheer contrast between said games is one reason the fanbases of both series are so divided.
>>
>>340417345

Whatever. My other points still stand.

I remember going through the MSX MG games, I didn't make it very far although I wish I did, one thing I do know though is that the only true way to play MG2 is with the Mel Gibson/Sean Connery sprites.

You can. If it's using an original script, original assets and original trademarks, it's perfectly legal.

>>
>>340418367

You can't. You could only claim "fair use". Which isn't a defense that could hold up in court. A remake would obviously be in direct competition with the original game, and thus harm them.

Did you make this thing yourself? Because this shit is totally indefensible.
>>

>>340418660
But if it's an entirely original work - which I described in my last post - there's nothing for Konami to claim was ever theirs. Fair use has nothing to do with this if no one is using Konami's assets.
>>
>>340418660
You're not wrong but the original Metal Gear is essentially abandonware and has been for a long time now, even if you consider the ports included in MGS3.

But again, you're not wrong.
>>
>>340418878
What about the characters and the story? And the level design?
>>
>>340418878
>But if it's an entirely original work -

Which uses the trademarked term Metal Gear, which acts as a remake. It can easily be confused for an official product and is in direct competition with the original work.

>>340418994

"Abandonware" is not a legal concept. Konami owns this shit until it enters the public domain which may never happen.
>>
>>340419105
Like I said, original assets and an original script. I highly doubt that making a level that has a similar shape to one in Metal Gear, as long as it's using original assets, could possibly be construed as copyright infringement.

>>340419139
I said "original trademarks." Clearly they did use the Metal Gear trademark in their title, which was a mistake. If they hadn't, I think it would have been difficult for Konami to do anything about the project, or at least the project would have been better off.
>>
>>340419659
But then it's not really a Metal Gear remake if it doesn't have the same plot.
>>
>>340417037
Pen and Paper RPGs, like Dungeons and Dragons or Call of Cthulhu.
>>
>>340420002
You're right, but more importantly, it's not a Metal Gear. Konami would have no legal say in its fate. I think a Metal Gear remake would be a bit far fetched anyway, I think a reimagining would be better. A remake would only butcher what Kojimbles originally wanted. But I'm a purist.
>>
>>340417648
You are confused because that anon is retarded. The "C" in CRPG stands for "combat", because oldschool PC RPGs were mostly based on Dungeons and Dragons. Oldschool CRPGs usually are isometric, have a lot of dice rolls and have a lot of text.
>>
>>340417510
That's not how it works. If other games in the same genre come out and circumvent or improve upon the mechanics of an older game in the same genre then it's pretty hard to go back and play the older title. I would say that that qualifies as "having aged poorly." A good example is RE tank controls; why go back to that mess?
