You seem to fail to realize it's a traditionally-animated movie in a time when models and computer-generated stuff was taking off. It's also one of the few good and memorable traditionally-animated movies from those years. There's been very few since, all the others of note took after Toy Story and Shrek.
That, and it's kind of a timeless subject with good voice acting and animation.
