>>
it's not as bad as the user scores make it out to be
it's not good by any means, but it's not shit either

you can pretty much turn off all the annoying runner's shit
the terrain is okay, but suffers from the disorganization you would expect from an open world game
combat is shit, but we knew that going into it

all in all, solid 7 can even go up to an 8 at times

Mirror's Edge is one of my favorite games. There are undoubtedly massive flaws, but at its core it's a very solid first-person platformer with a fair amount of depth and a unique aesthetic. The pure time trials DLC is god-tier. I was definitely looking forward to a sequel so they could remove the combat, fix the story, and give us more great level design to time trial on. Unfortunately with Catalyst they seem to have done the exact opposite, plus murdered the visual design to boot.

Hit the nail on the head.

Instead we get the lazy hand-to-hand shit and even more forced combat sections.

Instead it's a generic coming of age story with incompetent and annoying characters that are constantly shoved in your face.

>great level design
Instead the city is a bland open world, and skill tree unlocks ensure every area is accessible only through basic moves.

>>

why design platforms when you can just put a grappling hook there
>>
>>340354116
Ahahaha oh wow
What's the point of a grappling hook if you can't use it at your own leisure?
>>
>>340354471
My guess is that because it's open world garbage they had to have some kind of fast travel system.
>>
>>340354471

The idiots had to put it in just to let a parkour character cross large sections of the city. Because an actual open world city isn't truly conducive to parkour. So it's a cheat just to get across sections that the mechanics you actually want out of the game won't let you get across.

Once I heard about this damned grappling hook I knew they had fucked up this open world shit. Fucking ruined it by going with a fad.
>>
>>340354471

>>
The first game was unique, if a bit short and flawed. I don't know anything about the second, but this isn't exactly surprising; EA is capable of fucking up a good thing.

For the PC players out there, does anyone know if this is just another stupid Origin exclusive turd, or does it use something like Denuvo on top of it? For all their faults EA usually doesn't add the shittiest copy protection known to man atop their proprietary Origin titles, so if they did that here then there's zero chance i'll be buying it. Otherwise, I'll pirate it see if its another "gonna beat it in a couple hours, kinda forgettable" experience or not and then decide...

>>
Oh and if the game turned out truly shitty... I remember way back when there was some sort of issue about Anita or some similar SJW disciple being given a job working on this title.

Did that actually pan out, and is it part of the reason the game turned out shitty? From the criticisms I see, it ignored the gameplay that made the first unique etc... which seems like something one of those ilk would do, favoring instead drumming up certain "story" elements.

Why the fuck are people so obsessed with "open world"? You can't put too much blame on AAA devs because they only do this shit because it's popular. We see it with so many games where they decide to make the shift to open world and most end up being shit.

Only in the narrative to keep things varied and there are some side-quests specifically for combat if you like it, but there are plenty of other modes where speed-running is the focus (Dash Mode for eg)
>>grappling hook
It's contextual and also helps in connecting levels/zones. Literally nothing wrong with it.

You unlock everything relevant within the first two hours. It's not an issue.
>>overdesigned aesthetic
Absolutely subjective.

If you want stages, feel free to just play the Dash modes.

I honestly can't understand the hate the game is receiving, but I'm hoping the normies buy it just so we get at least one more in the future.

Mirrors Edge came out of no where and was a simply amazing cult classic. Open world isn't pointless, and there are levels in the game - they're called Dashes.

People forget Mirror's Edge wasn't just about jumping around buildings. Each level was contextualized like that, yes, but at its core Mirror's Edge was a racing game. You were given a course with an obvious route, plus many less obvious shorter routes and small optimizations that could be made. Though the story never used any environment more than once, shit like time trials (especially the DLC) really showed that the most fun could be found by fully understanding a course and working out how best to traverse it with expertise.

An open world really does not do anything to help this sort of game.

Just jumping in here, but the ONLY counter-argument I have against that is that being about free-running, it does make sense for the game to have the attitude of no walls or barriers being able to hold you, which a linear game obviously can't do. But, open worlds fuck everything up, so I'm not going to argue that it was ever a good idea, just that it could thematically work. Also EA, so it was doomed forever.

>>
>>340362941
I haven't played Catalyst yet so I can't really give a good argument here. But I don't expect good things. The original game's linear courses lent themselves very well to time trials. An open world almost by definition will have less focused level design, and I expect the dashes in Catalyst to fall short of those in the original. But maybe I'm wrong and DICE will blow me away. We'll see.

>>
>>340362123
Mirrors Edge was entirely built around tight level design, where you were running through a linear level while trying to work out how to progress. That's where the fun of the game was.

Once you start forcing an open world into things, you lose the ability to create a well designed, linear level. Sure the idea of running around an entire city sounds great, but the design of the world suffers. You can't design a proper path for the player to run down, since they'll be going down that path in every possible direction at some point.
>>
>>340363373
>where the combat is significantly worse then the first one
I don't need to explain a subjective opinion I disagree with.

Just because you think the combats shit doesn't mean anything, doubly so because the combat is literally beside the point of the game.
>>
>>340363056
Bad news, friend.
>>
>>340362813
Well that's kind of the thing... freerunning isn't actually all that free. Especially when we're comparing human physical ability to the sheer dimensions of modern urban architecture. There are some gaps you'll never be able to cross, some walls you'll never be able to scale, etc.

I've been expressing this sentiment a lot in recent threads, but a fun open world game basically CANNOT have much in the way of environmental obstacles, otherwise playing becomes a chore. And ME1's entire game design centered around such obstacles. I mean, I fucking ADORE the Atrium climb, but I wouldn't want to do something that technical every time I wanted to get up to a rooftop.

Maybe there is some theoretical open world parkour game that *can* work, but you'd have to make a hell of a lot of changes from the real-world sport to make it fun.
>>
>>340363613
