Time for another Monitor vs HDTV Thread.

post setups and brands

also pros and cons
>>
remember to power your monitor with 400V's of electricity or else it won't work at 144hz
>>
>>340347001
monitors are superior

In general, output to TV is blurry and 1080p tvs aren't actually 1080, but a little less so parts of your screen are cut off. There's work around for this, but it's kind of silly
>>
>>340347139
t. PCuck
>>
>>340347001
Well TV can be used for both TV, consoles and PC.

PC monitors can only do one thing, PC.
>>
>>340347001
playing on tvs are okay. I'm currently typing and playing on this,

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-KDL60W850B-60-Inch-1080p-120Hz/dp/B00HPMCN74?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

the biggest thing, you need to look for is input lag; this one has 22ms, which isn't horrible unless you're playing twitch shooters, and even then it's still okay. I'm still supreme in CSGO.
>>
>>340347431
yeah.

if this was 2008

most modern hdtvs are fucking identical to monitors.
>>
>>340347615
Televisions have nothing over monitors beyond their physical size
>>
>>340347615
You realize you can hook your PC up to both a tv and a monitor, right?
Monitors are just better for both PC and Console, they're less grainy because monitors have higher pixel density because they have the same amount of pixels but are smaller.
I even tried it with my Wii U and a monitor looked much better.
>>
>>340347759

Input lag its okay as long you dont play twitch level shooters.

how is the big picture in games, good?
>>
>>340347759
>this one has 22ms, which isn't horrible
thats pretty horrible

5ms or less is ideal

>>340347756
thats not true at all, you can use a monitor as TV's no problem, they support a wide array of plugs and ports
>>
>>340347756
>PC monitors can only do one thing, PC.
PC user here and I use my Wii U on my monitor regularly. It's better than using a tv.
>>
>>340347847

How about plasma?
>>
>>340347759
>only 1080p
>>
>>340347089
More like 690V desu
>>
Speaking of this, which is better for PC gaming on a TV, the Steam Link or Nvidia's Shield TV? Is there a significant different in latency or anything between the two?

>>340347756
Only the lowest of the low end monitors only have a single DVI connection. Most have at least one HDMI. If you're OK with sitting in a chair while using s controller, console gaming on a monitor is totally possible.
>>
>>340347880
well as others have said, you can't really beat the color and contrast ratios on a monitor in games and honestly I end up playing most games on my monitor and usually just leave the tv for movies (game of thrones).

but it's still fun, it's nice to have the option. Total War: Warhammer looks fantastic on the big screen.

If i could go back though, I would definitely have gotten this instead:

http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-XR3501-35-inch-Curved-Monitor/dp/B01047I0X2?ie=UTF8&keywords=benq%2035%20inch&qid=1465347536&ref_=sr_1_1&s=electronics&sr=1-1
>>
>>340347001
Consoles on TVs

PCs on monitors

It's not hard
>>
I used to play on a 40 inch Sony Bravia. Games looked so fucking good it'd make jaws drop when people saw me playing on it. The input lag was just absolitely terrible.
I started playing on a <1ms monitor and I'll never go back. Even though games don't look quite as good.
>>
>>340347902

monitors with 5ms dont exist, response time sure.

best monitor input lag wise is 9.0 on rare brands.
>>
>>340348118
>monitors with 5ms dont exist, response time sure.
sure they do, do you even look? they're everywhere
>>
>>340347431
>>340347765
I had a TV that I had to use for a while as my primary monitor broke
I soon realised that the monitor was running at 30hz interlaced on the pc and changing to regular 60hz fixed every problem I had

Weird shit.
>>
Should I use my laptops monitor or my hdtv
>>
>>340348093
Why the distinction?
>>
>>340347001
>not using IPS
>using TN ever
>>
>>340347902
You're really not gonna notice those miliseconds unless you're at the top of your game in a twitch shooter. I bust out my monitor if I actually care in CSGO, otherwise it's fine.

>>340347997
Uh-huh. I'm not on the 1440/144 craze yet, the next thing for me.
>>
>>340348073
>you can't really beat the color and contrast ratios

wut dude

Monitors have terrible contrast ratio, there is not such thing as blacks in LED-LCD Monitors

damn i miss plasmas.
>>
stop making this retarded thread
monitors will be continuing to pummel tvs for years to come with no actual downsides
now fuck off
>>
>>340348154
Response time is not display lag
>>
>>340347001

Why am I getting a no signal shit when I try to plug my TV with my PC?
>>
>>340347972
No, plasmas are absolutely retarded to get for pc's, because it'll burn in the image of your desktop. It's not meant to have static images for long periods of time. You need to get LCDs.
>>
>>340348303
>blacks in LED-LCD
then neither do TV's

I'm getting screen tearing even when I just scroll down on a web page.

Any ideas?

GTX 970
>>
>>340348257

all tvs now have VA/IPS Panels.
>>
Been using the same 32 inch LG TV since the late 2000's as a monitor. I kind of want a 144hz monitor for the fun of it and because high framerates give me a stiffy and I do play matches of BF4 often as my go to game whenever I don't want to commit to any single player games.
Is it really worth it? Should I splurge and get a high end one with gsync? Or should I finally upgrade my old i7 920, motherboard and over sized case? Just trying to get a feel for how worth it they are to people without a lot of disposable income.
>>
>>340348779
yes
>>
Does anyone use their monitor as a TV? Are there any downsides aside from shittier speakers?

Just moved into my new place so I have a game room now. I got the big TV and PS4 in the living room and my Wii U in the bedroom. Having your own place is fucking nice.
>>
>>340348873
No
>>
>>340348498
Will be good for only gaming/movies?
>>
>>340348498
LCD's also have image burn in

IPS are the only true non-burn in screen
>>
Who else /Vizio/ TV here? I picked one up on sale a few years ago and it's honestly the best screen I own, even better than the OLED on my phone. My only complaint is that it's 60hz, but I rarely hook my PC up to it anyways so it's not like I'd even benefit from 120/144hz. Fuck all those store salesmen that try to convince you that you need to pay Samsung & others' premium for better TVs.
>>
>>340348950
What do you do and how much do you make?

I'm making 12/hr at Amazon and I feel like it'll take me forever to be able to move out on my own.
>>
>>340349074
I have a Vizio and I keep it hooked up all the time desu senpai.
>>
>>340349240
Army reserve/full time cook at a busy job. I make enough to get by and maybe buy one video game a month. It's actually easy to save up when there is only one person in the house and I don't have to worry about family or relationships right now. I did save up about 3-4k before thinking about finding a nice apartment.
>>
>>340348950
I've tried to move out, but even the smallest, shittiest apartments cost at least $1,000/month here in Los Angeles. Fucking sucks.
>>
Will people play RTS in a 60 inch screen?

>>
>>340349775
Of course not, RTS players usually want bright screens, good color accuracy and high frame rates with minimal ghosting.

They also want high DPI and screen resolutions, some shit a 1080p 60 inch screen won't do
>>
>>340349775
Mouse and keyboard are inconvenient at a couch, controllers suck for RTS. So probably not.
>>
>>340347784
There are 40" 2160p monitors now. Their PPI is higher than a typical 24" 1080p display though not so much higher that you need to use scaling.

There is literally no reason to buy a TV other than they're dirt cheap.
>>
>>340350135
>Their PPI is higher than a typical 24" 1080p display
Thats not saying much since my 1440p display is 24 inches

>>
>>340349056
>IPS are the only true non-burn in screen
Even IPS screens burn in, but never permanently.
>>
>>340350642
I'd rather just spend the money on a comfier chair so I'm just as comfy as I am on my couch.
>>
>>340350789
Here's mine. I don't play twitch shooters, so I don't have any issue with ms. Tbh, I'm more into atmospherics and stuff, hence all the speakers and sound chair.
>>
>>340349056
LCD takes much longer for burn in, as long as you're not stupid it wont happen

Mimi a shit. I miss Clover.

My desk is further back than it seems it the pic, and I usually only glance at the TV or keep it in my peripherals. Usually I only have a stream or a TV show on there so I don't usually pay that much attention to anything but my main monitor.
>>
>Friends ask me why I don't play FPS and fighting games on TVs and use my BenQ instead

>>
>>340351807

Its better than ever
>>
>>340350223
A 24" 1440p display is 120ppi while a 40" 2160p display is about 110ppi so your monitor is a bit sharper but not by a huge amount.
>>
Currently sitting on my floor with a wired keyboard and mouse typing on a 42 inch TV about 6 feet away from me.

Definitely not the best experience, but it's more comfortable. I only use this PC for games that work with a gamepad and it's been working great for me for the past year.

TV PC'ing is pretty much only good if you also have a regular monitor and PC set up on a desk in the house.
>>
>>340352587
That's honestly one of the reasons I went for a 40" 4k monitor. Its large enough that its comfortable for 10 foot duty, but sharp enough for normal PC use as well. So no need for a second display.
>>
>>340352770
But how is it when you want to play with a mouse and keyboard? Do you still sit far away from it? I ask because I only have a living room PC set up which makes playing RTS games and other M+K games almost impossible.

>>340353337
I'd need to commit a wall to semi-reflective paint. Maybe when I have a spare room.
>>
>>340353337
It sucks though because my apartment is too small for a real screen so I am using a 80" self-supported screen
>>
>>340353571
I use a da-lite theater-lite
>>
>>340353238
I've got a desk set up under the screen since its primarily a dev machine, I sit a bit more than arms length away from the screen which is wall mounted. I've been running this kind of setup for a few years now and its a very good solution for a small area since you can have your desk for up close mouse and keyboard double as a tv stand for speakers or remote controls.

the Witcher 3 will play better on:

a 240inch LCD Monitor
a 60inch Plasma HDTV.
