Why does /v/ hate JRPGs? With the likes of FF15, P5, and SO5, you'd think there would be more love for the genre.

/v/ doesn't hate JRPGs. Look at any top games list and it'll be full of them. I don't like JRPGs because they are narrative driven, slow, and require little to no motor skill.
>>
Only underage redditors/funnyjunk hate them.

Slavs and Japs are literally the only ones who still make good games.

The Dark Souls series literally has one of the highest if not THE highest skill ceiling of any RPG.
>>
>>340310396
Agreed. Soulsborne and Witcher 3 proved that.
>>
>>340310468
Indeed.

Meanwhile in Clapistan, there hasn't been a good game released in a decade.

I fucking hate RPGs, this shit killed video games. Still, jrpg >>wrpg, at least there are some jrpgs with gameplay that requires skill.

I know, that's an indictment on the genre.

Whoa there, brother! Say what you want but you have to admit that the good ole U.S. of A. came out with some great stuff recently! Games like DOOM and Fallout 4 are revolutionary achievements in video gaming!
>>
While the market for video games has grown massively in general, casuals never flocked to JRPGs the same way they flocked to other genres, so the JRPG audience didn't grow proportionally.
>>
>>340310910
Yeah. Just like Monster Hunter, Freedom Wars, Toukiden, Ys, and every other action-focused JRPG are "exceptions". As well as every SRPG, rhythm-focused RPG, and anything else that isn't quite literally Final Fantasy 1-6.
>>
I don't like JPRGs normally because the stories are usually crap. The relationships are so cliched, all the protagonists have spiky anime hair, dressed in avant garde hipster clothing or just full of zippers, and realism gives way to style.

If an RPG is light on the story, then I can consider it worthwhile, or worth a play. But the ones that rely heavily on story are, to me, pure garbage. Persona, Xenoblade, Final Fantasy, Bravely Default, etc.

>b-but muh 100 hours of gameplay

I'd rather have 10 hours of gameplay with no story whatsoever, since I can at least replay it without being bombarded with cliche anime garbage every 5 seconds.
>>
>>340311113
Those games are all quite easy. What kind of point are you trying to make?

Let me guess, you call Mexican people Americans too right?

You can just skip cutscenes in pretty much every game after the PS1 era if it really annoys you that much, yet you still want to play for some reason.
>>
>>340311512
The comparative Western RPG is dramatically easier. Not to mention you could just say "that game's easy" to literally any game that exists.
>>
>>340310396
>Slavs

Literally one good game, Dying Light.
>>
>>340311708

>pretty much every game after the Ps1 era
Say that to Final Fantasy 10, and Final Fantasy 10 HD, and Final Fantasy 10 steam edition.

As someone who loves JRPGs such as Souls and Dragon's Dogma could someone here please explain Persona 5 to me? I don't understand the hype surrounding it but want to get into it. What exactly do you DO in the game and how much time would I be able to invest into it?

Also, yes I'm a shameless fan of anime and watch it pretty much everyday.
>>
>>340311716
Yes, RPGs in general are easy. But we're talking about JRPGs here. Single player games are generally simple enough to master. That's why I prefer competitive games.
>>
>>340312489
Okay so basically you're a kid who meets people during daytime and kills monsters (using Personas, powerful demons) at night.

Personas are linked to his personality. Basically a persona is how people see you. By developing bonds with characters your personas get stronger and stronger.

Artstyle is awesome, music is fucking great. Gameplay is simple but addicting and fun.

Play P3FES, it's really worth it. Then try P4.
>>
>>340312760
>That's why I prefer competitive games.
I still don't understand this argument. You could have a comically easier time playing any competitive game than any non-competitive game. You just need to wind up against an enemy who isn't as good as you are, and you obliterate them blow for blow, unless the game is rife with limitations for the sake of "Balance", in which case the entire metric for success shifts to "Get as close to abusable as possible and repeat for the highest W/L ratio".
>>
>>340312975
I don't think you know many competitive games.
>>
>>340310396
This is why /v/ hates jrpgs. The fans are insufferable.

You guys hate other genres more than you like yours.
>>
>>340312783
Is it Open World or linear? Are there any choices in how the story plays out? I'm assuming turn-based battles.
>>
>>340313684
Are you one of those Go/Chess autists? I'm talking about Fighting games, RTS, ASSFAGGOTSs, and FPS competitive.
>>
>>340313847
During the daytime you can run around school or some parts of town (they're more seperate areas than one big world) but nighttime is all one really fucking long dungeon in P3. P4 and the other games are a bunch of smaller dungeons.
>>
>>340309103
I don't think Dawkins would actually say that. I think he would appreciate things like Professor Layton more than Final Fantasy 543
>>
>>340313998
Yes, and there are so many more than that. Out of those I only play fighting games.

You're a typical high-schooler mary-sue who battle the same 8 reskinned demons at night and socialize with anime cliche the day. Gameplay is nothing special. Music was pretty unique but I didn't like it that much.

Overall I had fun fusing the Personna (basically Pokemon that the main character can use) but the rest was pretty boring. I have no idea why this serie is so much hyped.

I also tried Personna 1 but the music gave me an aneurism and I quited after 20 minutes

Anyone who isn't underage knows that JRPGs, in the 90s and early 00s, were as stagnant as military shooters were after Call of Duty 4 came out.

I don't hate them. I'm just sick of them.
>>
>>340309815
Considering most JRPGs usually have a YHWH-like deity as the ultimate antagonist, it would seem JRPG is a genre that would appeal to him.

Thanks, I don't own any Sony platform other than the PS4 so I won't be able to play the other games in the series but I'll definitely check out Persona 5 when it releases. Hoping it has enough content to keep me occupied for a few weeks at-least.
>>
>>340315651
As big of a stereotype as it is, I don't think JRPGs where you kill gods are really in the majority. Usually it's some other complete bullshit.
>>
>>340315778
I haven't played the other games but Persona 3 took me ~80 hours to do everything.
>>
>>340315836
Breath of Fire 2 and the SMT series are the only ones that really come to mind now that I think about it. I'm guessing you could count Kefka and Sephiroth's angel forms as deities too.
>>
>>340311707
You are a subhuman shit. Poles are Slavs. Make your peace with this fact.
>>
>>340311707
>>340310781
Actual Pole here

Poles are the Western most slavs (well, Silesians technically are, but Silesia is split between Czechia and Poland). Polish is a Slavic language, just like Serbian, or Russian.
>>
>>340316002
Eh I wouldn't count that as literal gods, at least not YHWH style dieties, they're just super-powerful chucklefucks, they didn't create anything.

Stuff like Luminous Arc has you beating the shit out of their world's creator though.
>>
>>340309103
/v/ doesnt hate JRPGs they love JRPGS they just hate weebs and like to trigger them so they shit on games everyone loves like persona

Besides he'd probably actually like jrpgs since you end up killing "god" a bunch of times

The key word >>340316248 uses here is the word "Western" to describe the kind of slav they are.

You don't call Mexican people Americans even though Mexico is in South America do you? No, you call them Mexicans. So why call Polish people Slavs if they're from the Western Slavic region and act completely different from the slavs that everyone thinks of?

Your hasty generalization of an entire ethnicity is really disturbing tbqh.
