It's not so bad if you're prepared for it. It's just that on your first playthrough you probably won't be prepared for it.

Also, in 1.13 there's an option to turn off the counterattack if you're a pussy.

in vanilla, the Drassen counter-attack doesn't really happen
you might get the occasional standard 20-or-so attack

in 1.13 they enabled the counter-attack. depending on the difficulty, it'll be 60-80 soldiers that arrive quite short after taking over all of Drassen. it's doable if you savescum and/or use cheeky tactics

Vanilla JA2 is not that hard. I was able to steamroll through the game in a couple hours.

JA2 1.13 kicked my ass though even on the lowest difficulty.

If you're younger than 25 or so this is understandable; JA2 alone was several levels more sophisticated than most games from the 00's onward, and 1.13 adds enough complexity to the mix that your average gamer isn't even going to know where to begin.

Check out some YT playthroughs of 1.13 to get a feel for the flow of the game, and study the wiki like it was a holy document.

This is the game that made me understand exactly why police/SWAT call for reinforcements when storming a reinforced position (in real life).

Even 2 or 3 guys defending a single room can be a challenge for your 6 mercs. After the first 4 or 5 bad encounters, I just said fuck it and chucked nonstop grenades from every window I could find. The game gives you a ton of them, anyway.

In Vanilla, I only started using mortars when trying to destroy the tanks in the airport of the capital city, because the LAWs kept missing shots (only later I learned you should use them from a roof), and they're very cumbersome to carry around.

I never used many grenades, but they're really good to flush people out of rooms.

The only thing that keeps me away from playing this is the idea of losing soldiers to the point that i dont have anything left by the end of the game.

I am use to XCOM UFO Defense where if i lose a very valuable soldier i can just send a rookie with a bunch of vets and have him trained up.

In this game however you only get a handful of player-made soldiers and a truckload of mercs that are expensive and if they die, their number goes down and down until you are left with shitty ones.

I wish i could take shitty guerrilla soldiers and control them as my mercs.

You can. You can recruit four rebels throughout the game, and there's some locals and others you can recruit but pay daily.

There's also the shitty MERC units you can train to be as good as the AIM ones.

JA2 is infinitely more forgiving towards putting your men in danger; unless you are crazy unlucky, the odds of one of your men getting blown away instantly as often happens in XCOM is very remote.

More often than not, YOUR forces are the apex predators on the field up against dozens of lesser scrubs.

And if they do happen to catch an unlucky burst of 5.56 to the face, well, go back to your last iron man save and try the battle again.

Well, off hand, you can manually highlight all of your squad with mouse gestures, and there's also a key that auto-chooses all mercs in the current squad; this will force them all to move at the same time.

There's a ton of things like this that make movement and basic tasks simpler, read up on the wiki, it should have at least a list of keyboard shortcuts for the most vital functions.

Even JA2's rendition of Hardcore/Iron Man mode allows free saving outside of combat; don't consider yourself cheating if you have to re-do the whole damn map again just because the last bastard still there got a lucky shot after a 30 minute firefight.

Normal Mode save scumming, turn-by-turn, shot-by-shot, however, is omega pleb-tier.

I base this on nothing but random bits of 1.13 forum shitposting and conjecture, but I believe the NCTH was the grand idea of one of the more influential code monkeys on the 1.13 project, and they couldn't veto its addition to the game without untold levels of butthurt and eDrama.

That said they thankfully let us toggle it away effortlessly, but I can't conceive any other reason why it hasn't just been outright removed by now.

Who here has any good JA2 kill stories?

I had stolen the Kingpin's treasure and he had given me two weeks to give it back. So on the 13th day at about 3 in the morning I surrounded his house with four mercs. I lockpicked his doors shut so no one could escape through the doors and proceeded to load up all my mercs with 40mm grenade launchers containing mustard gas.

So I shot the mustard gas into his house, which is annoyingly long and not wide at all. After about six or seven turns of hearing people choke out and gasp, I sent in Monk and Shadow to clean up the mess. The Kingpin had found a single corner that hadn't been exposed to the gas, and took a few failed pot shots at Monk. Monk proceeded to hit him directly in the face with another mustard gas canister and I watched him suffocate to death.

What other game lets me lock a man in his own home and then mustard gas his entire family to death?

Fallout lets me put C4 and primed TNT on children, letting them carry it back to the fence that they work for and then blow up both the fence and all the child thieves.

But mustard gas? Only Jagged Alliance 2 lets me cover an entire fucking area in mortar'd mustard gas. Speaking of which, I have NEVER been able to get mortar's or Radio's to work in JA2 1.13. I can never call in strike support VIA radio even if someone has a mortar equipped in the adjacent sector, and the mortar never seems to set up properly.

I think this thread has convinced me to replay again- but this time with the old CtH method. I refuse to put myself through the new CtH method anymore, which I have been doing for over 4 years.

Vanilla behavior of "Ehh meng, go conquer six towns and then I'll come along maybe" is horseshit; you're already within arm's length of Medina at that point.

Curious, RE: your mortars and radio issues. You are using the radio with a person who has the new "Radio Operator" skill, and the radio has a charged battery, yes?

Also, the radio function to call in mortar strikes is infinitely better used with adjacent Militia; they shit out mortars for free, and even a full stack of mere green militia can pepper the hell out of an area.

Of course. I am using someone trained in Radio Operation, it's equipped on their back, and has a full battery. Never. Ever. Fucking. Works. Ever. I really want it to- it'd really come in handy when I move from the central town towards Alma or the prison for example, but it just doesn't fucking work.

I have four different JA2 1.13 installations on my PC. I'm going to find my Alruco Revisited one, start a new game, and after 30 fucking hours of gameplay and securing the starter towns we'll see whether or not it works.

that truly is the worst part of starting a new JA2 game, that initial mother fucking push every single god damned time. It's a game that, once you've played it a few times, you fucking dread to start and dread to finish but have a fantastic time in-between.

Damn, this is a tricky one. I hate to sound patronizing, you won't believe how many "what do you mean my backpack drains 1/3 of my AP" moments I get when talking about 1.13 functions with people, so I always go with the insultingly basic parts first out of habit.

Do your radio functions on the strategic map work, such as Radio Interference to block reinforcements, or Eavesdropping? If not, it sounds like an outright scripting conflict, if yes, I might have an idea.

This game came out 19 years ago and other RPG's can't even do this shit anymore. This game was made by a few dozen hillbilly Canadians high as fuck and on Newfoundland Screech and this game is better than every tactical RPG that has ever come out since.

He's done it with both Conrad and Ivan Dolvich.

There are certain characters that, under duress and after significant morale boosts (I am guessing here, I don't know the mechanics behind it) with each other in the sector the characters will ease on their hate of one another, or remove it entirely.

It's not true with all characters I think, but I know for a fact Monk learned to work with both Conrad and Ivan without threatening to leave, and there was dialogue for it.
