Oblivion and Skyrim have the 'best' combat systems out of TES games. Doesn't make them not shit compared to Dark Souls for example though.

Can you explain how? They have the best animations obviously but mechanically they're not much better. In fact I would argue they're worse since they don't integrate any kind of dodge/parry.

morrowinds combat was not as bad as people remember, it was just a table top dice roll style, and limited your weapons you had no skill in to misses rather than less damage.
after level 40-50 in a weapon skill you never really miss

It's a slightly different beast. It's hard to talk about first person when that "person" is a 6-man party glued together. That's already a layer of abstraction to hide behind, and then there's the fact that it's turn based, which means rng is expected.

I recently played Marrowind again (Got stuck and stopped playing but that's a different story) and yeah, combat was way better than I remember.
I tried to build a custom battlemage, and it SUCKED. Literally that mudcrab webm. I took 10 minutes to look at some quick guides, and the next character I made was slicing through enemies proper.
