Even outside of stuff like Mass Effect, I can't think of much myself. There hasn't even been a decent Star Wars adventure game for a good while. Hopefully Star Ocean 5 will fit the bill.

They don't sell. People don't want big space drama, they want either over-bearing sci-fi B movie monster horror a la borderlands, or gritty open world serious planetary shit, like red faction.
Phantasy star never recovered after online came out, it will always be forced into the position of ARPG instead of the magnificently crafted story JRPG it once was. Not that it's a bad thing, I like PSO but I will always prefer PS2.
Star ocean suffered a similar mortal wound to it's brand with SO3, then it just killed itself outright with SO4. I don't know how SO5 got the clear to be released, but, well, it did, and it's just fucking awful.
everyone's too interested in making deep action combat instead of just telling a story of adventures throughout the galaxy. For once i'd rather have them stick with a time-tested gameplay system, like ATB, and just fucking craft a beautiful world.
