What is the BEST area in Souls?
>>
Irythill of the Boreal Valley is exceptionally well made.
Nightmare of Mensis has great level design and atmosphere.
I like Shulva and the Dragon Sanctrum the most though. It's interactivity and all the movable platforms shit was great and I was sad to see that DaS3 didn't try something similar.
>>
Painted World of Ariamis

Bloodborne had better areas.

Anor Londo. And god, that return visit to it in III hit hard man.

It's like Anor Londo in that it looks nice when you first see it but is pretty much total garbage in terms of level design.

>>
>>340224635
This. All the DaS2 DLCs had fantastic level design. I liked how each area had its own gimmick. Shulva was a series of walkways suspended above a chasm and you could make your own paths by hitting certain stones. Fume Tower was a constant path downwards to the ashen dome at the bottom. Eleum Loyce had you backtrack through it after turning off the blizzards, opening new paths.

>>
>>340224635
It's my favourite out of the 3. I've gotta admit that a huge part of that is because I absolutely love snowy castles, but I also loved the more down to earth design of it compared to the other DLCs which were more abstract. The backtracking gets a lot of shit but it distinguished the area from the other DLCs and from the entirety of the base game, not to mention it used shortcuts in a way similar to Dark Souls 1, where you used them to travel the world rather than just use them as a quick trip to the boss fog. Also the build up and reveal for Ivory King was excellent and really made the boss fight memorable despite being kinda bland mechanically.

Certainly not best, but I have a fond spot for Aldia's Keep. The way that level is basically a straight line with little to no danger, and it's only because you can't but follow your player ways of touching every level and visiting any nook and cranny till it becomes a hellhole to get though.

Cracks me up from a level-design standpoint.

People like you are the reason we get so many linear areas now. Fuck off.
>>
>>340225963
I'll admit I'm kind of lumping it in with the Great Hollow in my head. Still, these two areas are amazing in the way they are totally out of the way yet are so crucial to understanding the game's themes and metaphysics. They don't force these areas on you, they're just there (and would be extremely well hidden if not for the note system). There isn't an exciting optional boss or a huge amount in the way of content, but they're ridiculously atmospheric, the level design in the Great Hollow is amazing (like >>340226132 said) and emerging out onto Ash Lake for the first time is just a sublime experience, at least on par with that of glimpsing Anor Londo for the first time.

It's one of the most memorable parts of my first playthrough of the game. As much as you can say other areas have better combat and more to offer in terms of content, there's just an air to the place that feels unlike anything else in the game.
>>
>>340226423
There's also the sewers but all of those areas are small parts of the level that you don't have to explore much. The village areas not only make up most of the level but also take quite a while to explore because all of the hidden shit there.

Yahar'gul is a strong contender for worst designed area in any Souls game. It's basically the Catacombs from Dark Souls except if the necromancers respawned and buffed the skeletons, and the wheel skeletons could shoot you from miles away. That place is a fucking shitshow.
>>

Everything in the game hits hard.

>Firekeeper saying "Forgive me sister."

Did it? I was really disappointed. I mean it's tiny as hell and doesn't really have much going on outside the wedding stuff and the dead Giant that apparently everyone loved for someone reason. I mean it didn't really have that much importance or impact compared to the first game either, it was just another area not very different from any other. It's not even that fucked up either it's just cold and dirty.

Anor Londo's castle has multiple floors, a basement, several rooms to explore, a balcony, and the main hall which connects to the outside in 3 different ways. It's not the most complex area in the game but it has a hell of a lot more to explore in it than anything in Irithyll does.

Miyazaki is a confirmed hack who thought to himself "this game would be great if we took the interconnected world that was one of the greatest improvements Dark Souls made over Demon's Souls and threw it in the fucking trash" and decided to have a hub-based world with linear progression and warping from the start. He even reprised the fucking Maiden in Black.

Majula is completely devoid of personality. Every NPC is either a rehashed character from DaS or a vendor who sits in the same spot for the entire duration of the game and has zero character motivation or development, their lines never even change throughout the entire game. In order to make the player feel attached to the hub they would need NPCs with actual personality and goals who actually tried doing shit on their own once in a while instead of sitting around waiting for your chosen ass to buy something from them. It's an actual chore to go back there all the time. The music is pretty alright though, one of the stronger pieces on the ost.

Hunter's Dream is boring as fuck all. No ones there except the doll and nothing ever happens. I think it's the best looking one by far but unless you're some kind of sick fuck who likes Chalice Dungeon's there was nothing to do. Majula was also boring since again nothing happened and while it did have a fuckton of people they were all boring as fuck. In fact it's so boring it's the only hub in the series where the final level and boss isn't accessed through it. Again really pretty though.

Firelink from das1 sucks, every NPC is either a vendor who sits in the same spot for the entire duration of the game and has zero character motivation or development or just a cardboard cutout of their previous selves, their lines never even change throughout the entire game.
>>
>>340230425
I didn't realise the view is what makes the hub. Sorry anon.

>>340230529
Yes, but instead of taking anything good from Demon's Souls they took the one thing that was unquestionably worse than the system they used in Dark Souls. There are great things about Demon's Souls that weren't replicated in later games that they could've borrowed but instead they went and took the worst shit possible.

>>340230710
Why have a hub at all if there's only one NPC there who never has any new lines? This is the same problem Majula has. The game forces you a warp when all you want to do is buy some shit and level up. The only reason they do it is to give you stockholm syndrome so you like the character, even though it's objectively worse than having vendors out in the world, being able to warp from one lantern to another and level up at them, etc.

Sure, if you draw all the layers on top of one another it looks kind of complex. But really it's a straight line to the bonfire, then a straight line to Pontiff, then a straight line to Aldrich. The actual level geometry doesn't matter because there isn't anything substantial off the main path.

Ash Lake is still the best across all the games. It's just hidden in plain sight available right from the get go and serves damn near no purpose to the entire game, and yet it's still just so fucking cool to spend all that time playing the game, hear about some shit in the tree in blight town, realize there even is a fucking tree in blight town and then after falling forever you stumble out into this huge fucking expansive lake with gigantic trees everywhere and this music starts fucking playing.

I'm still disappointed none of the other games have managed to live up to this. I thought Shrine of Amana was gonna be great, then I got to deal with day 1 pre-patch casters in the water and the entire place was a fucking mess. Untended graves was dope, but it being the 5th game it's too easy to find such obvious illusory walls.
