Back when I first played second gen I didn't realize I was naming him, so I put in ??? because that's what it said, and I never learned his name. I went through the whole game thinking you weren't supposed to know his name.
It made sense to me at the time, this guy wasn't like Blue/Gary, my character didn't know them and they never actually introduced themselves.
I thought when I beat him the final time he'd reveal his name. Never happened of course. Man was I a dumb kid.
