>>
Valve is no longer a single player video game company.

They'll make L4D3, maybe make HL3 a multiplayer co op shooter and add crates or something and make bank.

They will never make a game like portal 2 or half life 2 again.
>>
>there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of fans who have died waiting for half-life 3

>>

They probably wanted to make a game and Valve doesn't make any anymore.

No one loses unless those two were really good at handing out steam refunds or something.
>>
What kind of idiotic aspiring game devs want to work for valve? Make hats all day? Optimizing the store front? It must be a terrible environment for creative minds

Get out of there, go to kickstarter, apply for different companies, anything, because even EA makes something at least

nu-valve is irredeemable trash and I will not support them by buying games from their store.

They treat you like a rat in a skinnerbox. Their entire focus is on automation and letting your braindead fans do all the work for them. You don't own your games and change their policy whenever politicians enact consumer friendly laws.

This may indeed seem like emotionalism, but not really. See I don't invest lots of money and time in their platform, because nothing lasts forever. What I mean by that is when Gaben dies next year of a heart attack, what then? Will some new laid back CEO take his job? Will they IPO and get bought out by investors that will turn valve as we know it into another EA? I'm just protecting myself against that

This monopoly valve has on PC gaming is cancer and has lead devs to become ever more lazy and inefficient

That was a good idea that was shortly executed, I'd it was in the hands of a dev that has the same altruistic outlook as Valve but without the rampant laissez-faire attitude, it would have been a huge hit. At any rate, they're back for DotA so try didn't give up on it.

Valve won't ever make games again. They have made a system, that children accept, that allows them to literally make millions of dollars each on a monthly basis while doing nothing but basic server maintenance and troubleshooting. Why invest the billions you're making into new, cool, innovative IP's and games when you can just sit at your desk and watch your bank statement go up in real time?

Valve is the George Lucas of Video Games.

The game is playable in it's current state, enough to garner several hundred thousand players constantly. I don't see anything majorly wrong.

>For TF2 only just now are they making changes the community has requested for YEARS now and that's only because they're threatened by Overwatch.
Oh really? Because they've put out stable updates since 2010, before Overwatch was even in development, and they actively playtest and work on the game. And if the community didn't want reskins and hats, why are they selling so well? It's what people want.
I don't think it justifies it, but Valve at least listens. It's like with paid mods too. When the fans lashed out angrily at the botched concept, Valve removed it.

>b-but the cosmetics abloo abloo

Yeah, look past that for a second. You'll see all the weapon balance changes, the glitch patches, the new maps, the new content in general. For example, weapon switching in TF2 is now much better for all classes, the puff and sting pyro AND the phlog have been reasonably nerfed while giving his regular flamethrower a bit of boost in power. Heavy can now break a sentry nest much better, spy now has better mobility, demoman and soldier have been reasonably nerfed (blast radius nerfs helped keep the air strike and beggars).

Are these all bad things?

Considering the amount of fixes present, that's more than acceptable. Nevermind the fact that they're STILL supporting a 10 year old game without asking additional money for mandatory updates.

Meanwhile, how's Nintendo's updates on Super Smash Brothers Brawl? How's From Software's updates on Dark Souls 1? Whatever happened to Halo 3's updates? Oh right, they all stopped.

but don't worry guys, Valve is the bad guy here. *wink wink*
>>
So fucking what? What was the last relevant thing they've done? Those dudes probably got bored of making TF2 hats.

Valve is just a company that owns a store.

The store, in fact.

I take your point though, Valve is no longer a game company.

After chet's bout with Chron's, I don't see Erik or Chet willingly parting from valve.

But on the other hand, I want to see more of Erik's work in games. It's frustrating, I know he's well off working for valve, but I also want to see many games with his work showcased in them.

As such, him leaving Valve wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if he was leaving to join a studio that could give him some canvas to fill. I mean, when's Valve going to actual start making games again?

But it's probably all fake anyways so who cares.

DOTA isn't going anywhere. GO is getting bigger, etc.

They never took any chances on Machines, all losses are on OEMs, Valve just gives them the right to use Steam logo and Steam Machine trademark. SteamOS is exists purely so they can can license Machines without paying 3rd party for licensing or support.
etc.

Steam is doing great. PC enthusiast market is slowly growing and they have nowhere to go, but Steam. We already have SteamOS, it's called Windows, Valve doesn't even need to pay anything for tech support or any other expenses.

Gabe doesn't like competition, what a surprise.
He started to rally against MS with Windows 8, my money on Windows 8 app store.

Gabe might be greedy, but he's not stupid, he will try to diversify his investments and Linux is a backup plan. He still makes business with MS, they partnered on a lot of stuff, including VR, he knows MS won't do anything drastic, but he will keep up his appearances battling "evil archnemesis" MS.

Did you miss the bit where I said he's not stupid? Sweeny got his ass handed to him by Spencer in under 3 minutes. None of his points were valid or even true. And then he went for another round just to be knocked down by Spencer again. He ended up saying he's wrong on all accounts, Spencer is telling the truth and he trusts him, but he still doesn't trust MS.

Gabe also got an actual competitor in the form of Facebook. He focused his attention there.

I don't even know what Valve is anymore. They used to be at the fucking vanguard of PC gaming, they brought in a renaissance with every release. Now? They're almost as bad as Konami, they're just lowkey about it. Most people have barely even noticed what a husk they've become. They've essentially let everything they've built rot and really haven't done jack shit in years except run steam and sell cosmetic items for the few aging multiplayer games they still have active. It doesn't even make me mad, even. Just hollow disappointment.

Vanguard?
They jumped in when Digital Distribution on PC started to take off, Steam, Gamer's Gate(store, not the other one), etc. Mind you, Steam started off as a management tool for Half-Life 2 mods and stuff.
They released several games exclusive for their platform, cornered the market and just sat there, doing jack shit. Now they have a whole economy where people can sell virtual items for virtual currency to get virtual versions of games. And a blind following with a cult status to boot. Steam and Valve are icons or saints by this point. Nothing they do will hurt them, unless they'll go full retarded.
Mods didn't hurt them. Their fiasco in EU gave us refunds, but now people are saying Valve wanted refunds all along. They keep appearance they support open standards, but they often do it by making up their own standards instead of using already well established and widely used ones.

Valve is still Valve, they just don't have to try anymore.

>is there still a strong community
Unfortunately the L4D community is among the most cancerous there is. I have no idea why, but the pub players that L4D attracts are just fucking awful. Poor to no skills, extremely obnoxious, and somehow elitist about their lack of skills, just to top it off. They'll spend the whole match screaming at you while you're carrying the team to make up for the two out of four players that split apart and ran ahead and immediately got pounced, and the third player being a drooling retard that can't move and shoot at the same time.

And versus is worse. Oh god, is versus ever worse.

>>
>>340235185

Steam machines probably do as well as any pre-fab gaming PC, Steam Link works okay for the small use cases it was made for and SteamOS/Steam Controller just flat out suck.

Vive's pretty good, though. Hopefully they're making games for it.
>>
>>340235185
SteamOS and Steam machine have always been valve's backup plan. They put forward a minimum amount of advertising and otherwise haven't really put too much effort into them. They "bombed" in the sense that steamOS isn't installed on every other system and steam machines aren't in every home, but I don't think valve really cares about that, they're content to have it in the background to pull out if microsoft tries to pull some bullshit in the future. Steam machines are sold by third parties who absorb all the costs and risks, so even if they only sold one system it'd be a net gain for steam, who just got a new customer. So overall I wouldn't say they bombed, at least as far as valve's concerned.
>>
>>340235817
This, the whole point of SteamOS and Linux gaming is to offer a viable platform and ecosystem in case Microsoft goes full closed platform. i don't think Valve ever expected Linux to supersede Windows just yet, it was more of a warning to Microsoft that they no longer have an monopoly on PC gaming.

Does it though? With greenlight, curators and cosmetics for their games largely being player made it seems like most of what Valve has done lately is minimize the amount of work that they actually have to do, which begs the question of what they're actually doing instead. League is trash gameplay wise but to their credit at least they have a steady output of content, both champions and skins. The Dota 2 devs don't have to worry about making skins and they still haven't managed to release a new hero in god knows how long despite still having a few more Dota 1 heroes left, which are already fully designed gameplay wise and have a basic visual concept. It doesn't take 6 months to model and animate a single character.
