Half of the people on my friends list are 20 year old college students gushing about how much they can't wait to play as a strong independent black womyn who don't need no man. Pokemon hasn't had a major mechanic added in twenty years. Every single mechanic added has been a secondary minigame or sideshow meant to distract the fact that the core game is the same thing you've been playing since R/B/Y
Meanwhile, Halo and CoD got fucking Jetpacks. You can throw homing grenades in CoD, and CoD also got killstreaks, new team roles, and even loadouts.
All of which at least changed the core gameplay.
Meanwhile: Pokemon gets a good idea and immediately discards it. It carries around dead weight from the 1990's when it was a flat JRPG on an overpowered graphing calculator. It could make things quick, easy, or fun. Maybe even integrate 3D mechanics, but it doesn't. It just wallows in it's own filth while people egg it on.
