An example, dare I say, of a "good" Sci-fi game, would be the new DOOM, since they explain the technology, and Argent energy, quite well.
However, in games like the new CoD, for example, they throw in shit features, and then use the setting to rationalize them, because, "hey, it's the future. We don't have to explain shit." So we end up with features with no explanation behind them.

I was pleasantly suprised. At least in the SP, which I bought it for.
I was worried about glory kills, like everyone else, but they're actually pretty cool, and keep the action flowing nicely. It's pretty hard toward the end on Nightmare. Haven't tried anything else.
Shitters on /v/ will tell you it's shit, and spout memes about it, and bitch about glory kills, despite not playing the game. But in all honesty, the game was pretty good. Most fun I've had in a while. I went in expecting shit, and had my opinion turned right around after 30 minutes of playing.
As for online, imagine Gaylo, but with health pickups, and useless shotguns, but I don't know why you'd buy a DOOM game for the online...
