Fear thread. Every fucking thread I've been in today has 404'd before I finished my reply. So this is for the anon who didn't get any replies.

I really doesn't matter, it's not like the sequels were good. Just play Perseus Mandate.

PM is the weakest of the FEAR 1 trilogy though, to many monster parts, not enough rooty tooty shooty.

Just consider it 2 canons. The FEAR 1, Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate timeline, and the FEAR 1, FEAR 2 + DLC and FEAR 3 (as if you'd want to consider it canon anyways) timeline.

Not on my laptop sadly.

Are there any good mods for FEAR? It was released at the tail end of the golden age, it should have some decent mods out.

extraction point is almost as good as FEAR, in my opinion. I like the focus on horror.
>>
>>340205180

What would you say was better, FEAR 2 or the expansions for FEAR 1?

I liked Extraction Point a lot too, but have yet to try out FEAR 2.

not many, I guess.

What did you guys enjoy more perseus mandate or extraction point? Kind of torn between both.
>>
>>340205842

The strength of FEAR has always been it's AI or well designed combat situations if you want to be autistic about it. So Perseus Mandate is the weakest because you fight non human monsters a lot of the time that just run at you like zombies, making the combat not nearly as interesting.

I think it gets worse as it goes along, but they are all good anyways. It's not that much of a quality dip really.
>>
>>340205384
Not him, but FEAR 2 wasn't that bad, I'd rank it next to OG FEAR and EP. Other DLCs are pretty meh.

I love them both, but FEAR2 is very different since it was a multiplattform release. lot of fans talk down on FEAR2 for being console oriented and therefore dumbed down. but even though the leveldesign isn't as good as in the first game and the AI certainly is less challenging, the overall design, atmosphere and story is still very, very good. it's a monolith game after all and those guys haven't forgotten how to make a good FPS.

I liked Perseus mandate better only because I got bugged out once or twice in extraction point that prevented me from proceeding.

Though, those elite nightcrawler soldier faggots are a bitch to kill on the hardest difficulty.

extraction point improves on almost everything that made FEAR great. perseus mandate felt a lot cheaper and not as polished or thought through.
>>
>>340205180
I've just finished Extraction Point, gameplay wise I really liked the improvements over the original game. Too bad that it was really short, like less than 4hrs on the hardest difficulty
>>
>>340207216

Are you the guy who made the other thread that 404'd?

Both the expansions are pretty short BTW, but Perseus Mandate is a bit longer than Extraction Point, but as another anon said, a bit less polished.

Does anyone know what that guy in F.E.A.R 2 says when you enter the building through the Coffee shop? It was something like, I could really go for a *really long coffee name* right now".

I couldn't figure it out and I really, really want to know. It also might not have been F.E.A.R 2, given that I has been awhile and I own all of them. My memories of them all have kind of melded together.

It was developed on PC and ported to consoles much later. I hope that (You) was worth it.

Underhell is a better FEAR game than the entire series combined.

F.E.A.R. is one of my favorite games. I felt that it paced the horror and action pretty well. Fear 2 SP wasn't as good but the multiplayer was a guilty pleasure of mine. Easily put atleast 100~ hours on x360 with my friends. And I haven't even touched Fear 3. I heard it just wasn't as good. Maybe I'll pick it up during the summer sale since it always goes for 5$.

On console it is, I first tried FEAR on PS3 and hated it. Put me off for a good number of years. Play on PC or not at all.

PC graphics are fine BTW and controls are godly.

That's good to know, it looks really good. It is finished yet. I don't want to start it and be left hanging for years.

If it doesn't have a cute ghost girl to screw with you, both literally and psychologically, then it can't be better than FEAR.

FEAR 3 is a good game, it just had a really weak story. It's perfectly fine to play through solely for the gameplay.
The really loud screams were irritating though.

what are you talking about? FEAR was a technical milestone back in 2005 that askeded for a very beefy PC: volumetric light, soft shadows, particles, AI, physics system - the list goes on.

Don't worry about him. He's baiting.

FEAR is absolutely fucking beautiful. That game is a visual masterpiece. I know some people get bored of the artstyle but I actually like the general sameness, there is actually a lot of subtly and changes as you progress and it just feels very natural like a real place.

Also when things are too shiny and pretty it's harder to focus on the combat, you wanna look around at everything. FEAR lets you focus on the gameplay first then take in the details later.

I thought Extraction Point was really boring and enjoyed PM more.

Fear 1 was a great game but it wasn't scary in the slightest and that's why I bought it, I wanted to be scared. Honestly the only time I got scared was the jump scare where you turn around to descend the ladder and Alma is right in your face. Seeing as it failed to do the only thing it was meant to do, I give it a 6/10 which would be lower if not for the pretty good gameplay.

FEAR 2 not only improved on most mechanics and added some cool new features, it was genuinely scary for the most part. 8.5/10 for great gameplay and scares.

FEAR 3 was mediocre and forgettable. Can't even rate it because the only scene I remember is walking on top of some shelves in the dark.

Some of us like an internal order to the environment in the game, rather than NEW DIFFERENT LOCALES for their own sake.
FEAR was just fine because it took place in office building environments.

I'm playing through FEAR for the first time & it's just not as good as people here make it be. Sure the AI is advanced & the gunplay is solid, but if it weren't for good spooky atmosphere & slow moit would be another generic shooter. The repetitive gameplay & environments & low enemy variety really bog it down, plus what little narrative there is, is uninteresting. I'll finish it, but I'm not looking forward to the others.

todays shooter games aren't even trying to reach the standards set by FEAR back in 2005. console gamers don't even know about what PC FPS were able to achive more than 10 years ago.. this is why CoD gets away with one decade of complete standstill.

FEAR isn't meant to scare you, it's not even a horror game. It's a FPS first and foremost. The spooky is just there for tension and atmosphere. There is nothing about the mechanics to even suggest it's a horror game let alone survival horror. If you bought it to get scared, you were mislead.

Same for people who think Bioshock as meant to be scary. It's just macabre Halloween dressing pretty much in that game, it's got horror aesthetics for the sake of coolness not for actual horror. Same for FEAR.
