If you don't insist on playing games vanilla for the first time, get GMDX, it immensely improves gameplay. Other than that, if you can't advance, look for side passages, there is always one.

Envromental training, heavy and medicine are also not very usefull skills. Lockpick and Electronics are musthave. 1 point in hacking will make game a lot easier but also a bit less fun cuz you dont need to find the passwords.
You may or may not like it the first time you play it.
