I had really high hopes for Telltale handling ASOIAF but they just pandered to show watchers with an equivalent quality of writing.
I think any game based on the universe will follow the show instead of the books. For that reason alone I couldn't get excited for it.

Magic missiles are fine also, so long as they're internally consistent with the fantasy world. If some teleportation spell exists, the author needs to make such a spell consistent so that events in the world happen accordingly with how common it is. Super common? Entire economies are built around it, social structures rely on it, and so forth. Super rare? There better be an explanation of why it is rare.

My problem with Telltale's game, aside from it being dull as fuck, was that they just retread the same grounds the show did. Game of Thrones RPG did a much better job with offering new stories that worked within the setting and interlocked with what we know, more from books than the show.

I don't think Malazan would really work without some heavy restructuring or cutting out, at the time, meaningless subplots. Also, I'd probably wait until the entire series is done considering you can't really tell what's relevant and what isn't until it's resolved. First book alone is content packed and a lot of it makes sense in retrospective once you know more about the setting.

Prince of Nothing might hit that mark now that Bakker has decided to do 3 trilogies of 3 instead of just 3 books because of the amount of content. Literacy, like all things, has levels, it's not just an on and off button. You should. Malazan was heavily based on Black Company except it cranks fantasy to 11 and is much bigger in scope. Black Company is more grounded and has a smaller cast, but you can clearly tell Bridgeburners are largely Black Company in a different setting.
