Rondo of Blood is pretty good but the backflip is retarded
Bloodlines is also pretty good but the final boss is lame
SoTN is not castlevania in any aspect besides music and enemy designs, still a good game but I don't know how people manage to play and enjoy the portable games when they are basically the same shit but with downgraded everything.

Oh and I forgot 68K.. It was okay and had great tracks like moon fight and etude for the killer but it was not as good as Rondo or Bloodlines.
The only parts I enjoyed were funnily enough, the remade Castlevania 1 sections of the levels, everything else was mediocre.

What was the point of the whip upgrades in 1? When you die you lose it but they make it so easy to find the upgrade again, why don't you just start with with fully powered up whip.
I tried to get into Castlevania a while back. Started with emulating Super Castlevania IV.

That's the smoothest playing one of them all.
I don't think it's the best, but it's the one where they went out of their way to make it easy to control.
All the other Classicvanias control stiff as all fuck, which I personally enjoy, but if you're looking for a fluid Classicvania you're looking in the wrong series.

Adult Maria is a different matter. She went careening around Dracula's castle on her own, repeatedly getting ahead of Alucard and still surviving without issue despite having no idea what she was doing. Simply because she's just that crazy strong.

I've played through CV1 so many times the more I play it the more I realize why it's so good. Every stage is like a river and you're a trout going upstream, planning and choosing your every move, plowing through aggressive as fuck and never stopping for anything unless you have to for optimal spacing to whip some fucker into shape.

The gameplay was mediocre at best and very poorly balanced. You couldn't/shouldn't even use most of the moves you got. The environments were the best part by far. If they had just made the scope of the story and combat a bit simpler and more refined I think I would've liked it a lot. The sequels are trash though.

I don't think 4 is the best. The PS1/X68000 reimagining of Castlevania 1 (Chronicles) is probably the best in terms of level design and challenge - if you play on Original mode (not the girly-looking/sounding Arrange).
IV is a good game, and is probably an easy introduction to the series, though it's more slow and atmospheric than its challenging and tight predecessors.
The NES/FC Castlevania is still an awesome game, as is CV3.

Who cares anymore? Classicvania phased out centuries ago and Metroidvanias still going strong with Bloodstained.
I'm more mad we'll never get more Bomberman, Gradius/Parodius or Pop'n games than about Castlevania. They don't have the same cult fanbases to back spiritual successors and their devs don't have the same influence Iga and Kojima do.
