Holy fuck OP for fuck's sake. In such a game like that each character becomes a symbol, not a realistic representation of a human, in that character specifically you need to identify TWO THINGS: That he's a prisoner (wearing orange) and that he's handcuffed.

Would you rather have a realistic fucking character with tiny little handcuffs that you can barely see?
Realism for realism's sake is fucking dumb, don't forget you're playing a game, and messages have to be efficiently conveyed.

op's a fucking idiot. play dwarf fortress with more than 200 dwarves in your fort and even that will lag the shit out of your pc. because SIMULATION GAMES like dwarf fort or prison architect require A LOT of calculations and they want to minimise the load that the graphics/animations put on those calculations.

I really don't mind that sort of character sprites, and at times the game actually looks gorgeous if it's properly zoomed out, it only starts getting weird when you zoom in too much, but there's nothing fucking happening and the "gameplay" is a bunch of QTEs and walking around.

Also it gets a little frustrating visually when they decide to mix non-pixel art assets with "HD" assets and certain effects. Also pixel size inconsistency.

With a little more care shit could actually work.
