What's the appeal of Baldur's Gate?
Lately I've been playing old RPG's I never could get into, recently started BG and I don't get why it gets so much praise. The main quest doesn't pull me in so far and characters seem just flat. The side quests and combat feel like a chore I have to do to progress, the most fun I had was the one with guy turned into chicken and it was like 10 minutes long. Character development is great but alignments are killing me. Can't say much about dungeons yet but what the fuck was even that forest with spiders.
Does this thing get better later or what?
CRPGs thread I guess.
Fuck off.
Low level DnD style adventuring.

Most of the praise is directed at the sequel actually, which is the superior game.

It lead to BG2 , that's the appeal.

It literally brought CRPGs back from the dead because publishers weren't willing to fund them because "RPGs don't sell". Other than that it's a standard DnD adventure. You need to realize that alignments are really just flavor. BG1 has the best dungeon in any IE game though and that's durlag's tower so make sure you don't skip that one.

Also it picks up once you get to Baldur's Gate.

The open world and sense of exploration

Decent D&D cRPG

That's what I always heard and the only reason why I haven't stopped yet, and I swear to god if BG2 isn't that good I'm gonna find every last one of you neckbeards over the world and feed you dnd rulebooks.

>RPGs don't sell
I love how Troika convinced Sierra to publish Arcanum, which then flopped terribly and contributed to Sierra's death. That whole game is one big epic fail, and so lovable at that.

>all those amazing IPs sierra had are now wasting away to never be utilized again except for maybe a mobile cashgrab

He feel for the open-world meme!L O L

>he didn't fall for the open world meme

This, though the biggest merit it has is that the whole game is very freeform and lets you go around however you want.
