What the fuck, was /v/ trying to trick me again?
I've been putting off this game for a year now because you guys kept saying the combat was shit and I believed you with your cherrypicked webms. After the critical acclaim of the new expansion, I finally decided to give this game a try. And guess what? The combat is actually not that bad and provides a decent challenge if you actually play on a difficulty level higher than Story and Sword. I mean what the fuck we're you expecting for a story-based RPG, Devil May Cry combat? This is the last time I listen to opinions on this shitty board ever again.

Honestly though I suck at this combat. A pack of drowners either takes forever to kill or I get my ass beat up by them but kill them in like 1-2 minutes.

Swing swing, they dodge, close the gap and they swing, I dodge and then swing swing. This is like every monster so far and I don't remember Witcher 2 being this tough or lame?

But no seriously screw you CDPR for fucking up the graphics.

Learn how to dodge, and get some oils for your swords, they help a lot

You can also make decoctions and shit. What swords are you using? And difficulty?
My silver swords are around 400-500 damage

Sounds like you're purposefully making the game as boring and overly difficult as possible by not bothering to prepare for any combat at all and just spamming basic attack. By "sounds like" I mean that's factually what you just said, blame yourself, not the game.
>>
>>340125139
I think it looks pretty good

B&W improved the graphics as well
>>
>>340125018
>Swing swing, they dodge, close the gap and they swing, I dodge and then swing swing.
There's your problem. Mix your attacks with some magic and use oil, jeez isn't it obvious? Drowners are weak to ingis, if you read the bestiary you would know that.
>>
The combat is shit. Dodge the enemy's telegraphed attacks, fast attack a few times, dodge back out before they retaliate, and repeat. Quen is available if you're a shirter that somehow gets hit.
>>
>>340123651
>I mean what the fuck we're you expecting for a story-based RPG, Devil May Cry combat?
Why not tho?
The combat is not 200% shit but this is really high quality game in every regard but the combat, they really should play some jap action games from the last 10 years or so and realize they are not doing the best they can honestly.
>>
>>340125245
I'm still pretty early, only level 10 and just ended the Vike Isle quest line and doing other side-quests in that area. I can hit dudes fine, but it's just I really felt more aggressive and fluid in the other Witcher games (even the first one) than I do in W3 so far.

Dodging even seems weird to attack out of, like the pause after dodges are performed are huge and I might as well be starting a whole other combo of attacks again.

>>340125491
Why would I waste oils on drowners? I know they are weak to ignis (as I did read the beastiary you cuck) but this is pretty much the same for any monster fight so far: water hags, rotfiends, alghouls, anything...
>>
>>340125334
Would you prefer the guy to keep fighting after you set him on fire?
>>
>>340125347
Don't be so defensive, but literally why would you waste oils or potions on a random group of drowners? That is absurd.

I've played and finished W1 and W2 and I enjoy this game, but this combat is way deadlier than the other games.
>>
>>340125652
Use the signs, use quen so you can stand the drowners hits, use igni since theya re weak to that, etc.
>>
I play on Death March and you can deal with 99% of situations by putting on Quen, hitting light attack once or twice, then dodging and repeating. Putting Quen back on whenever it falls off or you take a hit.

The combat is incredibly dull because of this
>>
>>340125652
>Why would I waste oils on drowners?
Because using oils isn't wasteful. Once you've used alchemy to create them you have unlimited oils. Used up all your oils? Just meditate for an hour and bam, you have them all back.

I was expecting something above the level and depth of an Elder Scrolls game. I really hate this mentality that it's okay for role-playing tames to play like shit. No wonder these companies put more time and effort into their cinematics.

>>
>>340125765
It's not really damage efficient tho. And also won't help much when fighting several enemies with a ranged attack.
>>
>>340126407
No, i do agree that quen can get a bit boring but roll , hit light attack once or twice and roll again is the same in pretty much every game yea

>The combat is actually not that bad

Please keep playing the game more. You will soon realise that the game only has couple kind of enemies.

You got humans of three kind. One with sword/bow, one with a shield, and one with two-handed weapon. Then you go to monsters :
>Every draconid moves and attacks the same.
>Every wraith moves and attacks the same.
>Every necrophage apart from water hag attack and move the same. Couple of the necrophages have special attributes, like exploding on death or reflect, but their attacks are still near identical
>Every beast is the same

I could go on forever. The monster variety is great, but holy shit they could've done much more with it. Apart from wraiths, dodging to right and attacking works for every fucking mob in this game.

If not, I'll just buy it during the sale with other shit I pick up since it's only like $30

So did the B&W dlc finally add some challenging enemies?
>>
>>340126312
Lots and lots of conditioner
>>
>>340131820
What's wrong with it? It looks good and has lots of enhancements
>>
>Still easy even on death march
>Absolutely ridiculous alchemy builds. End game magic is no slouch either.
>Parry and dodge frames that can be measured in seconds, trivializing any fight as long as you are not greedy when counterattacking
>Oils are infinite use. Once you run out of charges you can just open the menu and reapply them
>>
>>340132065
>whining about difficulty when you can just mod that shit
>>
Toussaint is fucking gorgeous, the environment is actually colorful and full of life which is a welcome change from the main game where everything was gloomy.

Fairy Tale world was 10/10
I wanted to go back...

They don't make games to cater specifically to you

heyuh
>>
>>340131892
Well besides the final boss having a really easy to dodge move that can one shot you (even with quen up) not really. As long as you aren't really greedy it's just as easy as any other part of the game.

Sticking your foot in your ass is challenging too but still stupid, Igni stuns human enemies because they are... burning alive and stuff.

>>
>>340132506
the whole point of a difficulty level is that it caters to casuals AND people who actually want a challenge.

difficulties which arbitrarily decreasing damage done and increasing damage taken doesn't make it any harder, they just take longer to kill. mods don't excuse poor game design
>>
>>340123651
You should have known that /v/ likes to nitpick every single game. Especially masterpieces like The Witcher 3.

this argument isn't any less stupid than it was 20 years ago.
>>
>>340123651
Shit's hilarious. There was a thread yesterday evening I think, some "what went right" thread for bloodborne? Retards were like "sidestepping, bro. It's a much better mechanic than rolling"

Literally ok when bloodborne does it.
>>
witcher 3's combat is not special in a positive or negative way
it's there, it's serviceable, it's not super engaging, it's not offensive

combat is one of the least important aspects of the game

it's a good adventure game
>>
>>340133250
>making things hard for the sake of being hard is good game design
some enemies are weak to certain things, the humans behave like they should if they were on fire, thats solid game design.

Did people actually not like the combat? I thoughtit was really well done, and if they had improved on the IA a little more and had a more seamless way of changing the signs if would've been perfect.

So yeah why people actually said the combat was bad is beyond me.
>>
>>340133679
Morrowind existing doesn't make Witcher a bad game, that's not an argument
>>

yeah, it's kind of weird that the points you get through combat are spent on things to get better at combat
>>

That guy never said witcher 3 is bad, just worse than morrowind. Nice argument witcher drone.
>>
>>340133432
literally every common enemy staggers to igni. It's realistic, but ruins the challenge of the fight. realism isn't important in a fantasy videogame.

why doesn't geralt instantly die when he gets shot or stabbed in the face? That's not realistic at all. horrible game design.
>>
>>340133679
> A Game that consists entirely on fetch questing, rat killing and talking to the same lifeless NPC's over and over again

W1's combat was shit though, not fast and fun like an action RPG, and not enough depth and options like in a tactical RPG but something in between.

Really fucking shit
>>
Alright, I am gonna assume 90% of the people who finished B&W got the bad ending on the first go, right? Just got the ending where DANDELION bails me out of prison. What a fucking bro. Totally came out of left field. Also, Regis wasn't that good of a character DESU. Also Aerondight is fucking OP, I think I swung my sword 5x at Detlaff and took him down to his third form

> DaS having casualised combat.

Please name a single action RPG with a more tactical approach than Dark souls
>>
I don't remember thinking W1 had bad combat.

But I used the Combat Revamped mod, which basically made combat fast and brutal. Basically, niggas arms be getting hacked off in a hit. There were no meatshield damage sponges.
>>
>>340133341
it is though, it has fewer iframes and is faster in general, its better for the overall pace of the combat, but only dark souls faggots hate it cause they cant wear havel tier shit and just poise through everything and then use 2 rings that still gives you fast rolls
>>
>>340123651

Anyone else actually enjoy the Witcher Senses sections. I just enjoy the fluff dialogue where Geralt describes the wounds caused by monsters like a forensics investigator. Feels like I'm playing CSI: Polish Folklore.

Game definitely needed more variety in the non-combat sections, but it's understandable that a guy who's greatest assets is his inhuman senses would use them a lot.

Nigga I was just playing the game and enemies with shields don't even flinch with igni unless they catch fire, which is random.

The only other game that had investigative segments I can think of is LA Noire, and instead of Witcher vision they made it so you heard a jingle when you walked past an object you can investigate. They're both literally the same thing in my opinion. I'd rather just see which items my character can interact with from the get-go instead of running around a room like an autist spamming E

According to the book lore (it doesn't really work like that in the games though) most monsters can fuck you up with one hit regardless of any armour. By not using any and not having a helmet you increase your mobility and visiblity. Having armour against a monster is like wearing a buletproof vest against a .50 BMG.

Speaking of combat

I really like the game, but at first I thought the combat was kind of floaty and a lot of button mashing
But then I turned up the difficulty a notch to blood and broken bones and started to treat each fight like a dance with its own rhythm and the combat actually became fun when I was dodging and attacking fluidly with different types of attacks instead of just button mashing and checking my way through each fight with quen

Everyone always talks about the combat, but why does no one talk about the terrible controls? Witcher 3 could have been so much better if the controls were better. Everything is so delayed and you feel like you're only partially in control. It really bothered me when I played the game, and still does now when I'm playing the expansion.

I still really enjoy the game though.
>>
>>340141186
I don't get the delay meme. Aside from turning from a sprint, shit's not delayed.
>>
>>340123651

>>
>>340141307
I dunno man, during combat it takes Geralt a good while to dodge after I press the dodge button. Well movement and dodges seems to be the things that feel most delayed. Combat is quite responsive. Geralt attacks when I press attack, uses signs and bombs when I press the button. I don't know why it works like that.
>>
>>340141449
I don't get that at all. I'll go back in and fuck around a little but I don't understand what you are experiencing.
>>
>>340125652
Oils are not limited, once you've crafted the bottle it lasts the entire game.

Use oils every time, and having a decoction active at all time is a good idea too (especially with the alchemy skills that give you bonus when you have a positive toxicity).
Brewing the potions that are limited in use only costs a bit of alcohol and a calm spot, so go nuts.
>>
>>340141534
That's odd, so you're not experiencing the delays? Could it be a console problem then? Yeah, I play on consoles. Shit PC etc...
>>
>>340125334
