Alternately, playing God. Which us also typically frowned upon. What happens when the immortals make mortal babies? Overpopulation? Energy and food problems? Even if they were made sterile these things are there, so is war with the newfound power. Utopia isn't going to build itself as soon as everyone is immortal, in fact human nature would likely lead to another war.

The whole Rare purchase incident was largely an issue of pride and presenting an image. Nintendo never outright purchased the company when they "had the chance", so Rare sort of started looking for other buyers in a huff because they felt they weren't getting enough recognition and money from Nintendo. They were probably hoping Nintendo would bite and give them what they wanted in order to protect the Rare titles from going to a different company, but Nintendo called their bluff and let it be.
I really doubt Microsoft even really wanted Rare specifically or had any actual plans to do anything with the company. If anything, they're content to just sit on the company and let them piddle away at whatever, so long as they aren't making games for their rival Nintendo.
