I started playing Dragon Quest VIII, my first in the series, just earlier this week. Got to the part where Angelo joins your party. The aesthetics are gorgeous and the game is very charming so far. If I have a complaint it's that the areas in between towns feels like a vast area of nothing where you just run into random encounters.

Katakana took me awhile too because I rarely saw it. I just learned the kana while reading Genki, so I had the hiragana memorized in a week. Katakana isn't used so often in there. Once I started reading manga and games, I learned the katakana pretty quickly.
Truth be told, I started three years ago but only recently got the days of the week down because I never ever saw the names of the days of the week used until I played Persona 3. It's all about exposure.

I played it like, 7 months ago, and only for the first time so my memory is hazy, but I can't really remember a lot that would be in danger of being censored in that game. Maybe the puff-puff thing, those are sometimes censored, sometimes not, but I can't really think of anything sexual. Might be forgetting something somewhere.
Though God will probably be called The Almighty or something. I can't believe that was changed in DQ IX, and the Angels were changed to the Celestrians, and the Angel's Realm to the Observatory and the Goddess Fruit to the Fyggs... I've got to email Plus Alpha and see if they'll tell me why they made such dumb changes. They said in an interview that since Dragon Quest's worlds aren't at all Asian, that there's no point keeping the Asian names. I for one don't change names unless there's a really good reason to, but I can see their reasoning to an extent. However, I can't think of many Asian sounding names in DQ. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Rikka. Changing Harry to Henry makes no damn sense.

Puns aren't necessarily bad, they have plenty of them in the Japanese versions too. I don't even care if they make some new ones as long as it doesn't affect anything. Changing names like Isis to Cleohatra to make a pun is unacceptable to me. I also don't care about accents as long as they don't go overboard. Yes they do, but not in most mandatory scenes. Remember the book from the begining of DQ V that reads: 「いっかくうさぎをいつかくう」? There were several pun books in DQ IX as well. I know there are puns in monster names too, though I can't think of any at the moment, and elsewhere. Just because you aren't familiar enough with the Japanese language or culture to notice them, doesn't mean that they aren't there. However, they are certainly not as numerous as in the English versions.

Was the first dragon quest i ever really beat, i actually just played through the whole thing today with a walkthrough for reference when i got stuck.
The only thing that i could really complain about is that the grind felt pretty unnecessary, but i listened to a podcast while playing, so the time went by fast.
Played the snes version btw, and i think overall i'd give it a 6/10, i liked the whole experience in the end
