SHOVE YOUR AUTHENTICATOR UP YOUR ASS GABE
>>
it's a matter of degree

he's lost a lot of trust over the paid mods issue, the fact that he still clings to it. he's going against The Internet, and he's supposed to be wiser than that. it's hard to trust his wisdom/perspective, any more.

however, on the flip-side, is what Valve has done with the Vive. they're probably the largest single contributor to making VR real (and it really is, regardless of how many /v/irgins cry out sour-grapes).

the real question now is if Valve can transition beyond him - he has to be retiring soon. most of the original members have already. just what will Valve be post-Gaben? literally what even will it be, legally/financially-speaking. will he just keep being the owner, and eventually it will fall to his heirs? or will he put it in some kind of trust?

Don't you dare bring up the earth being round fuccboi, this is a square planet board.

The only "bad" thing Gabe has done is completely distancing himself from video games in general and turning to hats for money.
I guess I can't blame him though, he's pretty old and if retards are willing to give their money, somebody's going to take it eventually.
>>
>>340082343

The one and only time Steam has ever been the "lesser evil" of DRM was when Ubisoft idiotically implemented always online requirements.

Apart from that everything has either been better than Steam or on par with it.

Don't even bother to claim bullshit like Starforce destroyed hard drives or Denuvo cripples performance. These are utterly unsubstantiated claims coming from pirates and parroted by other pirates.
>>
>>340082343
It kind of makes sense, considering there are people with thousands of dollars in their inventories, some probably in the hundreds of thousands. A bit surprised valve hasn't added mandatory identification requirements since one could argue they are a sort of a bank or a safety deposit box provider.
>>
>>340082343
I remember when valve made it so I needed to have broadband to play Half Life 2.

That was literally the most cancerous drm I had encountered to that point
>>
>>340082665
you don't remember how bad things were getting, for a while (up to the first few years of Steam, before it exploded into hegemony). forget 'always online', which has practically become the norm anyway. there were major, multi-million-dollar AAA releases shipping with literally broken DRM that would not let any user install the game at all. there were DRM schemes which limited lifetime number of installs. DRM mania was real and there is one read of history which would say it in fact DID destroy the PC games industry - and Steam exploded as it did because it was all that was left.
>>
>>340080021

>>
>>340083117
>there is one read of history which would say it in fact DID destroy the PC games industry

Bullshit. Always bought physical disks, never had any problems.

The "DRM mania" didn't even do an ounce of the damage microtransactions have done to the industry.
>>
>>340083117

Complete and utter crap.

Before Steam the only DRM that existed, apart from shit like MMOs and Blizzard, was a CD key and CD check. There were no limited installs as there was no online component at all. The "broken DRM' was DRM complaining about shit like you running drive emulators, "imposter" software, debuggers, etc. at the same time you are trying to run the game. Close the offending applications and the game ran fine.

It was literally years after the release of Steam before online DRM started to appear in non-Steam games. And Steam didn't "explode" until well after this, when the Steam sales started up.

i trust him more than more than most people in the games industry

(AKA not a huge amount)

but valve, despite having a big PC gaming monopoly, have not really abused their monopoly so far. e.g. steam games can have non steam releases, steam games can be distributed without steamworks DRM, game devs can generate steam keys for games that people have bought on other distribution systems, steamVR and steamOS are open-source, steamVR supports the oculus rift, etc

my biggest gripe about valve is that they don't make fucking games

i don't partake in the whole crates\gambling thing and i think if you do then you're retarded and you can't blame gabe

I fail to see how advocating against the renegotiation at a loss of ownership of sold software is being a libertarian waiting for handouts. it hardly matters "who did it first" its the fact that publishers create and push EULA's that you agree to, its not even a new thing. Sony and Microsoft, EA/Origin and Ubisoft all have EULA's for their platforms as well, don't try and sidestep that this is a steam only issue

>>
>>340090867

Well, technically it's more about the mandatory authentication + account tying scheme making second hand market impossible.

There tends to be a voluntary misconception about the possible interpretations of the word "own" when discussing that issue. You don't own the game - but then in that sense of "own", even the publisher doesn't. You do own your copy of the game. And now, the copy has been made untransferable. Legally you still have the right to sell, lend or gift the copy (at least in civilized countries). But it's been made value-less.

And that's before going into the purely digital marketplace related issues.

Yes it does, if one does it, everyone else will follow because it's seen as acceptable. Look at all your really old games from the 8, 16, 32 and 64 bit eras and read the ToS, they say no where they you do not own the game, only that you are not allowed to copy it. Now, it's common place to say you are not the owner of the game. Who really got that rolling? Valve.

>>

Scanning and saving your DNS and browser history and sending it all back to Valve.
>>
>>340092893
No it isn't, you posted a picture of some obscure ints and char digests. Do you even know what goes into programming or did you just google some image that you think supports your retarded narrative?

>int v1
>int v3
>unsigned int v2
>char digest

>int dnsfree
a fucking integer called "dnsfree"

Theres nothing here but someone setting up int names and shit
>>

So Spyware that looks at your browser history and then sends what it finds to a third party without your knowledge of permission isn't spyware?

Are you stupid or just in full damage control?
>>
>>340093715
3 things wrong with that

1. your picture isn't "scanning and saving your DNS and browser history"
2. thats called a tracking cookie if anything
3. your picture isn't even of something that looks like a tracking cookie

Also if you were so paranoid and you think I'm magically wrong or all of your tinfoil shit is true, then why would you run steam when you aren't playing a game?

>>340094056
>So Spyware that looks at your browser history and then sends what it finds to a third party without your knowledge of permission isn't spyware?
thats not even the definition of a spyware. A tracking cookie does that, even then what you posted isn't even a tracking cookie

>are you stupid?
your disinfo is wickedly stupid

>A tracking cookie does that

>Anti-spyware programs often report Web advertisers' HTTP cookies, the small text files that track browsing activity, as spyware. While they are not always inherently malicious, many users object to third parties using space on their personal computers for their business purposes, and many anti-spyware programs offer to remove them.

So are you implying legislative action wasn't taken against tracking cookies by the US and EU and it's perfectly fine? Or the fact that cookies are used through the program you're using at the time and they normally don't go into other parts of your computer to scan them like Steam does?

Give me a break.
>>

>So are you implying legislative action wasn't taken against tracking cookies by the US and EU and it's perfectly fine?
What does this even mean? You're saying because congress hasn't acted on obfuscating and obscure code and cookies is somehow testimony that its "okay"? Jesus you're projecting hard.

>>340094697
its not even a tracking cookie. What you described was a tracking cookie, what the article references ISNT EVEN SPYWARE NOR A TRACKING COOKIE!

That Code you posted is actually a .dll used in steam to detect hacks of other .dll's that reach out to known malicious websites that connect to hacking programs. Even then thats only for fucking VAC which is garbage on its own.

Christ you're fucking stupid
>>
>>340095001
Cookies are described as spyware and an invasion of privacy, legislation was passed to regulate cookies.

It doesn't change the fact that steam downloads code onto your computer to scan your browser history and send it back to Valve without your consent.

>I-i-it's only VAC, so it doesn't matter!
He's running out of steam for his damage control lads. Also the fact they're using VAC as the excuse to put spyware in your computer makes it all the more suspicious.
>>
>>340095001

I'm not describing anything. As a third party in that conversation that lacks intimate knowledge about the subject, I'm just pointing out that you seem to be saying that, as a tracking cookie does that, it makes the practice described acceptable, while the wikipedia page on spyware *does* stipulate that tracking cookies *can* be treated as spyware by users and professionals *because* they do that.

He meant "millions of girls(male)"

Yeah I trust the shit out of him. Unfortunately he doesn't oversee Steam like he used to.

Yes i do, i am a steam fanboy though ... i can't help it.

yes, and he's literally responsible for me making a living. I love and trust him

The Steam authenticator shit is the most annoying thing Valve has ever come up with.
I hate everybody that gave in and uses it.
>>
>>340097745

*Steam* is the most annoying thing Valve has ever come up with.
>>
>>340098061
I beg to differ.
>>
>>340098204

Well, without Steam being architectured as it, there wouldn't be a need for said authenticator, for one.
>>
>>340098427
There is no need for an authenticator.
They came up with an artificial problem.

And there is no need for the Steam client. Yet they still thought it was a good thing to make it mandatory.
>>
>>340090243
the truth is even scarier. all of Valves in-game economies are just experiment testbeds. Valve doesn't give a single shit about earning profit from them, and possibly don't. they're playgrounds for AIs to learn to play the real stock market.
