It depends on the setting and style of the game. For example, bikini armor shouldn't be acceptable in Dark Souls (I'm looking at you, Desert Sorceress set) because that game is all about knights and heavy armor.

Anyways, they did accomplish a lot though, they exposed the mailing list, the screwed reviews and pressured for transparency.

Overplayed, maybe, but so are the other elements because these games are nothing but heaping tropes on top of each other.
Here are pretty much the only reasons I keep seeing why people would object to it.
1) Jealousy/Envy: Can't look like the fantasy girl on the screen so you hope nobody else can look AT it. For the guys caught up in that, its because they can't get a girl like that and the obtainable girl that hates it too might touch their penis if they agree with them.
2) Embarrassment: You can see this a lot in "reviewers" and "journalists" who single this shit out. And its not that they're embarrassed for the game or its creators or its fans. They are personally embarrassed that they are enjoying it, even with all the ass and titties on display. Case in point, that guy who freaked out about Dragon's Crown sorceress. Dude got a boner while playing the game, freaked out, and tried to distract everyone from his boner by calling it, among other things, pedobait.
3) Think of the children!: This is always the rallying cry for people who don't want to actually be parents for their kids and for basically nanny-state busybodies. This is generally more of a tactic to help push an action that number 1 and/or 2 has caused though.
It never fails and its not just video games. Like when someone is loudly and constantly hating on gays and then they're found caught having meth-fueled gay orgies in shitty hotel rooms.

I feel that trying to make the bikini ornate or cover extra parts of the body ruins it more often then not. Best Bikini warriors have always been those with a nice simple bikini top with some metal and a loincloth or tight bikini bottom. It typically forces drawers to put more emphasis on things like scars or muscle and makes the chick look more baddass and sexy. Ornate armor is often an excuse to put little weak looking anime girls in the armor and that ruins it for me.
Mages are rogues are sort of exempt from this. Bikini robes has a bunch of satisfying combos and can be much more ornate and flowing at the same time which matches younger or more proper looking ladies
