PSO aged horribly. It had incredibly clunky combat. Retarded design choices (ID drops) and recycled enemies everywhere.
Its popularity is driven solely by nostalgia. Mine included. I only wish PSO2 and PSU could have captivated me like PSO did.

at any rate, PSO is a lot more rewarding and less frustrating to play than any single Monster Hunter game which tried so hard to copy the Phantasy Star Online 4-player online co-op concept while forgetting to copy the parts that made it fun.
They finally got around to making the PSU formula worthwhile with Phantasy Star Portable 2 but i guess they were tired of making good games after that.

Kind of wish they weren't making the game more and more casual-friendly with every update. The grind levels seem to be nearing PSO territory at this point.

I know it had significant drops in quality, but it depends what we compare. New content being less and less challenging, but even more grindy is awful, but improvements in the combat system that the game's been having over years are nice.
You wish you had anything to try the new toys on, though, it's becoming casual as fuck at this point, and the only options are either another difficulty spike that will rustle everyone like it did in 2014, or the same casual mess we've been having for the last couple years.
