And rumours it'll remain. After more than a decade of stagnation they're going to be so starved for R&D, it'll be virtually impossible to catch up to AMD and Nvidia. Even with Samsung's bank and fabs.
I mean, I'm all for more competition, and I'll gladly eat a cactus if Matrox shows up and does actually pump out something competitive, but the fact is that the duopoly exists not because Ati and Nvidia were miles ahead of the competition, but because everyone else eventually ran out of steam and failed. Even 3dfx tripped up on their own despite their their stellar products and success in the late 90's. By that point Matrox was already gone.

If they make cards they're just going to be another manufacturer, not a developer. I have a hard time believing they'd have the experience necessary to develop their own modern chips. Like everyone else they're going to license AMD/Nvidia tech, and that's presuming any of this true at all.
