It was the flavor of the month, and not in a bad way. It was good but it was short and simple. It had no staying power, it wasn't designed to have staying power. It was just a nice little game that took a lot of people by surprise with its quirkiness.

If you played Earthbound or any SNES rpg which I assume you didn't you will find Undertale to be just another game with interesting mechanics like Mercy and some inside memes.
Overall is another well marketed game full of cultist that take it as the second coming of christ.
